Karate and Drinking...
Hey everybody. im just curious about your opinion on drinking alcahol when training karate? i enjoy drinking with my friends in the weekend. But when the weekend is over, i always feel bad about myselfe for drinking. I hate having that feeling, and i just want to have a little fun with my friends? do you think drinking ruins your karate training. I also train 3 times a week, and train at home a half hour every day, except the weekends. I dont want to have this problem where i feel bad for drinking every time. Please answer.

Getting on the piss, as we call it here, isn't soo bad, but you have to aware of the effects it will have on your metabolism and ability to recover from workouts, everything in moderation!!

I used to be a big vodka drinker... then I switched to wine because it's "healthier" but I think i'm going to cut it out altogether. Even diet sodas.

As lanky sempai said, alcohol slows your metabolism and impairs your judgement and balance.

Don't drink and kumite! Think of the children!!!

Nothing wrong with a drink at the weekend! I also enjoy a good night out you got to have a life aswell dont be too hard on yourself! Not good to drink too much day before training as previously said wont help your training one bit but see it in a different light....If you have a good training session and sweat buckets then your sweating out all the alcohol! works for me! You dont feel so guilty then!

Well I think it really is somewhat an individual choice. Some fighters do not drink (2 years before the 6th world tournament Filho was already not drinking) while some drink occasionally. I think it's alright unless you drink excessively.

OSU!

i dont think drinking once or twice in a while would be bad for health..But i'd sugest just keep away from drinks, but some people just cant resist it mainly because of the climate and all..Here in india, it's not a must to drink to cope up with the climate, so the people here who drink just ruin themselves..lol..i'd suggest to keep away from drinks, there are many other ways of enjoying other than drinking and loosing our own senses..hehe.

Drinking, huh? I always wondered how would I perform my trainings drunk. I never tried this before, but I will do it (there's a party coming on soon ) I shall try to combine some drinking with some stretching ) I let you know of the consequences.

I don't think that drinking a few decent beers at the weekend is a big problem. I often go out on Saturdays, Sunday is my day off (no training) - so why don't have a drink when you're feeling like it.
But I drink no alcohol during the week and the day before training, because that makes me feel floppy and I hate that.

Osu,

There is nothing wrong with drinking expecially if it is Brandy or Cognac. I take a shot or two of Brandy or Cognac after training and before I sleep. This is good for the heart, arteries and circulation. Give it a try you will wake up feeling good.

BTW, drinking for the right reasons is alright but drinking in excess in order to get drunk can damage and ruin your physique. So drink maturely.

Osu!

Ahahahahahaha! You mean that night when I was doing hill sprints up at the park & you & your mates were hanging out the back of the car sinking cold ones no little voice said 'Maybe I should have gone training first?' So disappointed.

When I was younger I loved training hard on a Thur or Fri & then going out (needed heaps less alcohol) but can't cope with the hangovers anymore. I doubt any great fighters binge drunk their way through their training years. I know our guys had a season of drinking between the fight seasons when very little went down. So depends if you want to be great or have balance.

I'm such a geek guys, i love to my training too much to drink. I get tipsy on one glass of wine its very embarrasing. I hardly ever touch the stuff because I really feel it the next day and I dont like it at all. Maybe if you have an off season from kumite it is ok but before a tournament I wouldnt do it. i want to win too bad and if that gives me the extra edge to beat my opponent then I'm not going to drink a drop. I have to add though, do like a beer at the sayonara party with my Sensei

Ive trained while fairly drunk after the instructors sprung a suprise midnight training session on us at a summer camp its suprising how adrenalin clears the head and how quickly you sweat the booze out once you get going .
Alcohol need not be a bad thing in moderation the tanins in red wine are good for the heart and stout is a good source of Iron, thats what i tell myself anyway .

Read Michel Wedels book on Kyokushin Karate - He says that a couple of glasses of beer in moderation can help relax you - and he was a pretty good fighter so I always followed his advice in that book.

Except I'm Irish and we cant drink Glasses of beer - only pints!

I only drink milk and juice. I rarely drink alcohol. Most of the times its beer. Sometimes when I go to discos its "Schnaps" or "Red Rom". I drink them together both of 100ml but they are very week and I go two or three times a year to discos. I don't think that this has ruined my trainings. I like to go to pubs where I not drink but eat and eat and eat. I like eating while my friends eating and drinking. But they can't eat as much as I do so the bill is equal for all of us.
My advice is if you are going to drink much and get drunk do it on a day that isn't surrounded my training days

Unfortunately I'm British and like a significant portion of the population of this place I on occasion indulge in binge drinking - NOT good for training! Or motivation! I have tried not drinking for 4 weeks at a time before and It's true to say that it has made a big impact on not just my training but on my willingness to train - Life is too short though to carry on abstaining for too long in my opinion.

Has no one ever been to a Kyokushin tournament after party?? Maybe we're a bunch of drunks in IKO3, but every one I've seen the booze flows freely.

We have once a year around new year a sake training ,
where we invite other clubs to come to and every 5 or 10
minutes we bring a toast and drink a glass of sake.
(After the first hour of normal training ).
Lots of fun !!!!
