History? Biography? Instructional? "Absolute karate" by Howard Collins. Its pretty well balanced between pictures and text. Mix of kyo history and technique (with very detailed text description) book. "The budo karate of Mas Oyama" by Cameron Quinn. Mostly text. Kyo history and the like. Hard to get as it is out of print. A new print is on its way, but I fear that it will be slanted due to Kyo. politics. Tadashi Nakamura has written a self biography (as well as a mostly picture technique book), but I dont remember the name right now. It is supposed to be quite good.

The Tadashi Nakamura book is entitled the Human face of Karate and is indeed well worth a read Joko Ninomiya has done a similar(though less compeling)book called My journey in Karate .

I saw a copy of the cameron quin book go for over 400 us dollars on ebay.com a few months back... And i have a copy of the vhs tape by Tadashi Nakamura, i like the tape, mostly because of the info it gives not so much for the video itself, also liked the explanation why Shihan Nakamura calls his style walking zen. A friend of mine has eighter 1 or 2 books by Joko Ninomiya, think one is called my life in karate (or as billy said "my journey in Karate" dont know for sure), i`ll try and get fotocopies of those. I also have the book by Michael Lorden aswell, but its more a biography of Sosai, very interesting but not exactly what i am looking for.
What i am mostly interested in is, back ground info (filosophical, not instructional info) (already have quite a few instructional kyokushin books, with pictures) Osu..

oliver sperling has written a book? I didnt know that. Any links?
Michel Wedell wrote a book called "Kyokushin karate -training and fighting". A good book on how to train (not techniques, but how to make a training schedule and related issus), it also has some very interesting history and background info. Andy Hugs training program for the 4rth WT among other stuff. Michael J. Lorden rote a book called "Oyama -The legend, the legacy". Its basicaly a "light" version of Quinn Shihans book, but much cheaper and easier to find. It has some glaring errors in it -such as listing Enoeda as teaching kyokushin in england (enoeda is a shotokan legend), but mostly its a good book.

I noticed that Shihan Quinn's book is available as an "e-book" on his website for US$40. It is a revised and expanded version. I have a copy of the original and I found it very insightful. Not too sure what has been included in the new version though. |

Tadashi Nakamuras Pictorial book is called Technique and Spirit and is well worth purchasing for his views on Kata alone. He also includes some of his class speeches on a variety of subjects which are very philosophical and again the book is worth it for these alone.
