I have had 2 students in the dojo, i trained in, with diabetes (both were not yudansha`s)...
We had ground rules about/with them... 1) At all times stay with them, when they go to the bathroom stay near and dont let them lock the door (this rule should be applied everywhere, because to my experience it is when a students needs to go to the bathroom, is when stuff goes wrong and an instructor needs to supervise the class so i always send someone with them to the bathroom) 2) Before every workout/session let them test their blood sugar 3) Make sure they have eaten enough, make sure they get time to eat (at camps with surprise training sessions and so on). 4) Make sure as much people know about it as possible. They have not competed, but i would make sure of at least the following. 1) Before competing make sure they have a doctors note that says they can/are allowed to compete and give this to the doctor at the tournament 2) Make sure the doctor at the tournament has quick and easy access to the person`s diabetics-kit. 3) If possible bring a close relative of the person, someone who knows what to do when something happens. Osu

Osu!
Here in Lithuania medics don't allow to participate in tournaments if you have diabetes. In fact, officialy you can't train kyokushin, because it is full contact and the medics won't let you pass the medical tests, which are necessary. But I speak in particular about diabetes type 1, I don't know wether there is a difference between type 1 and type 2 persons. |
