Hanshi Steve Arneil 9th Dan in Kuwait March 2007 (IFK)
Hanshi (Professor) Steve Arenil is in town. Hanshi Arenil is considered the 9th Dan (level)- 10th being the highest degree in the karate block belt title. He is in Kuwait to train locals the Kyokushin karate, which is the toughest of all karate disciplines, which is played without any protective gear, and full physical contact.

Arenil started his karate discipline in Japan, in the year 1962, under Sosai (Master) Mas Oyama, one of the greatest karate icons in Japan. He was elevated to hanshi (after sosai) when he defeated 100 competitors in a one-on-one fight, which took place in Japan in 1964.

In 1965, he returned with his Japanese wife to his native English country (UK) to establish the British Kyokushinkai Karate Club-now, one of the biggest Karate organisations in the United Kingdom combined with Dojo (all forms of karate disciplines) all over UK.

He was instrumental in promoting karate in Europe. In 1975, he was awarded the 'best coach in the world award' by the French Federation of Karate. He started to develop the English Style Karate in Britain and defeated Japan in the world tournament.

In 1992, he resigned from the International Karate Organisation (IKO) and established his own International Federation of Karate (IFK) back in the UK with branches all over the world including Argentina, Germany, Kuwait, UK and the US.
The role of Professor Arenil is to provide an on-hands instructional training to students at IFK branches all over the world-which is the reason for his presence in Kuwait. His level of coaching is highly rated by karate enthusiasts and instructors all over the world and this was very evident from the huge turnout of Kuwaitis participating in the three-day session, which ends today.

According to Kuwait IFK President, Ali Al-Manaseer, Arenil's presence increases the level of awareness and enhances knowledge of Kyokushin karate in Kuwait. "I treasure his presence very much. In fact, when karate enthusiasts heard about Arenil, they all wanted to be present for his training sessions and be coached by him. He is an icon in karate and we are delighted to host him in our country.
We are thankful for his support," Al-Manaseer stated.

The IFK president also explained that despite the existence of different Dojos (Karate organisations) Kuwaitis are united in welcoming their honoured guest. Learning as many styles and skills from Arenil is their primary goal as he has very limited periods of visits in every country he visits. "We need such training if we wish to target awards or international titles. As Kuwaitis we all want to raise our national flag in international sports such as Kyokushin," Manaseer added.

He also expressed confidence on the success of three-day seminar/training under Arenil and was happy at the excellent support he received from all local karate organisations in Kuwait despite the lack of government support for this
particular sport.

"We participated and organised activities from funds from our own pockets. Maybe because we like karate and because we want to satisfy our selves and eventually raise our national flag high and be proud when we see it fly in other countries," he concluded.

I have copied the exact word of the news paper and as you see some information there is not historically correct so please make note of that.

I am glad to see that in Kuwait that everyone got together to train with hanshi arniel. In the USA most groups remain seperate and that is wrong. Having the open door policy with other groups is the only way that Kyokushin will grow worldwide.

In europe also different kyokushin groups get together for common events ...here in USA I noticed that it's hard to have them together, its probably because kyokushin here is so small ...

osu,

yes. spread it. ;-)

i met shihan arneil first time since he found his ifk, this year on diamond cup. he is one of the last living legends of our kyokushin karate, very polite and full of courtesy. everybody who can train with him should be very lucky...itīs a shame, that most of new kyokushin students donīt know him. cause on politics, the instructors donīt give his name and abilities, to the students. he was, after sosai, the first man in the world, doing 100men kumite...

any student and yudansha in the kyokushin world should know his name and who he is!

OSU!

That's silly that an organization wouldn't talk about Kyokushin great's like Matsui and Arneil (or Midori, Taylor, Roman, ect....) just because they belong to a different group. Silly....

Osu,

I agree it is silly. Especially since these Greats are part of the rich heritage of Kyokushinkai Karate.

Good thing we don't have that in Kuwait we all work as a team and between once and a while we train with each other ( look at what happened when hanshi came to Teach in Kuwait ) no matter (IKO1,IKO3, Kyokushin-Kan or IFK) we are also good friends.

We look at it as we all are Kuwaitis we all train Kyokushin but we only work in different Kyokushin groups but that's not bad it's a good thing because each group has something good to offer so we take it but we still respect the laws and requirements of the group we belong to.

It will be a bad thing if only because we belong to different kyokushin groups that means we can no longer be friends, train or work with each other.

I would say that's not Kyokushin that's not the true teaching of Sosai Oyama so please let's all try to spread that message.

Hanshi Steve Arniel didn't mind teaching all kyokushin members from different groups he also said "I will teach anyone who wants to learn" and he also said you are all welcome to join IFK tournaments and events. (What do you think of that coming from the head of IFK and one of the best in Kyokushin Karate)

"Train as ONE Fight as KYOKUSHIN" I would say ... OSU!!!

That is exactly what Hanshi Arneil's idea is. He is not in anyway interested in politics he clearly emphasises this fact. The world is his dojo. He just wants to teach anyone who wants to learn no discrimination whatsoever. That was his whole ambition when he created the IFK. To come together as one under this federation meaning anyone can enter our national competition and the IFK world tournament in 2005. Like was said in a previous thread he welcomes anyone to compete and they did IKO GB, Shinkyokushin, kyokushinkan, kyokushinkaikan and others competed.

A very interesting topic-not many people (karateka) have anything bad to say about (hanshi) arneil.
van bluming said some things, but hey.................
Anyone here trained or graded with Hanshi? I have, and in my opinion, he believes in the kyokushin way' many moons ago on my shodan grading, he pulled me out of the line' & said 'break this board'
(a piece of pine) so I broke it with a chudan tsuki (as u do!!!)
'hmmmm' he said, 'now break this one, but align your wrist, penetrate further, focus more,' (etc etc etc).
Actually, this post has made me think more, perhaps some posts of our blackbelt grading experiences??

Unhappy
Hi Goldberg, nope I passed that one! phew!!!! I did however, fail my first attempt a year before, hanshi noticed two major failures in my technique, one was in kata, his method was to start us in a kata and shouting 'yame' at any point-the theory being you should all be in exactly the same stance etc.
Guess who wasn't ;(
If I remember correctly it was pinan ni in ura & my blocking forearm was twisted the wrong way! then in kihon he deemed my feet to be too heavy' skimming the mat.
I was initially dissapointed on failing then throughout the months ahead I was angry & felt he was wrong etc...... but eventually my sensei and I felt i was ready again................perhaps when i passed I learned true kyokushin?
at least we all know we are worth our grades!!!
