Are you an Asian karateka?
First...

I believe Kyokushin, karate, and martial arts in general are gifts from the East to the world and all races and sexes can benefit from the discipline and test of spirit martial arts brings to one's personal development.

Second...

It is my observation from personally doing martial arts my whole life that the majority of those who take up martial arts are those of Asian descent. Maybe my perception is very skewed because I live in California. For example, my Kyokushin dojo is probably 90% Japanese or Japanese-American with another 5% consisting of other Asians/Pacific Islanders. (Personally, my dojo needs to tap into more of the general L.A. population for new membership.)

Lastly,

So I am curious for those in K4L world... are you Asian too?

No - Im Irish.

I suppose it depends where you live. Ireland doesnt have a large Asian population - in 21 years of training we have only had 4 or 5 asian students.

There are about 30 people actively training in our dojo, and other than Sensei and one Korean kid there are no Asians. From what I've seen in other Seido dojo's (as well as all style tournaments I've entered), that ratio is quite consistent throughout Sydney.

I should add that Sydney has a very large Asian population, so what I perceive as the lack of Asians in dojos is not a product of a limited sample space.

I'm Japanese. We have a couple of asian students in our dojo. In my last dojo we had about 6 chinese girls at once. When I started in Japan the people who I trained with were all asians.

Does feeling a little "in touch" with your "asian" side count aswell?

I'd like to train with more non-Asian lightweight fighters and take note of the physical differences.

At the moment, I am one of only 3 gaijin in my dojo!
I was at the All Kanto tournament on Sunday and could count the gaijin on one hand.

I'm a whitey American But everyone at my dojo is Asian, aside from another guy who's German.

But I guess the high concentration of Asians at my dojo is due at least in part to the fact that it's located in Japan. ;D

I can only think of a handful of Asians that train in karate in the dojo of Winnipeg. I would guess that more than 90% of us karate-ka are not Asian.
