KIAI in kata and kihon: Osu, shiaa, seei, kaaai, juu?
Dear,
In the dojo what do you actually jell if you make a kiai? I was in a summer camp, and noticed everybody yells something else at kiai in kihon or kata. Sometimes I hear juu (like 10 in Japanese) Sometimes I hear Kiai (its like you yell "YEEELL" in English) Sometimes I hear Osu Sometimes I hear shiiaaa (it does sounds like a samurai in movies) In Japan in hear (seeii) But what is actually the correct one? I agree that a kiai not only has to do whit sound but whit stomach power. (Sorry, difficult to explain.) The Japanese sihans says "tandhem" or something. But on topic: what do you say by kiai? |

I think I sound like shiiaaa, more like shuuuaaa
I'm always one of the loudest I try to push the air out (like the shhh in boxing) but with the mouth open, then somehow it becomes a shuuuaaa ![]() |

The tanden is the traditional home of your spirit and is approximately 2 inches below your navel (wher your belt knot will sit).
As for the different Kiais - In kihon we Kiai Osu on each technique. In the katas its different as sometimes the Kiai must cover three techniques and sometimes just one so I will change it to suit.

I was always taught that a kiai is a primal scream...so you open your mouth, and yell, the loudest, scariest, most blood-curdling yell that you can muster! It must encapsulate and express all of your strenght of spirit, determination, and will to live. What is sounds like is of secondary importance, and if you are trying to make it sound like anything then you are missing the point. Open your mouth, and just yell as if your life depends on it. because one day it might.

thanks hasbeen. I think you and I may hail from a similar era - we seem to think alike on a few things! Either that, or you are another twin brother of mine, separted from me at birth (as I have been told Spirit is!!).

We in my dojo are the same as tmd. Obviously people don't spill their beer when they hear me lol, but i can be pretty loud
! Sheeha on the 10th count. Also by doing this those who arent counting or away with the fairies know where we are if we change technique after every 10.

And in kata? Is it also osu on kiai? We do it so for the lower grades until 1kyu. than they are allowed to make other sounds! like shiaaaa!
In japan they say seih. It sounds really funny in the beginning! |

In kata we seem to do the same as you have said. But in another dojo i train in one guy shouts 'seei' its interesting and amusing at the same time to see the differences

During kihon we say Osu. During kata we kiai.
Excellent definition for Kiai Seienchin. Blood Curdling is the phrase of the day! I've also been known to variate the OSU sound to Osu-AH!

But in Japan nobody yells Osu for kihon. Would it actually be wrong to say osu as a kiai?
Í always wonder. |

We have the system as well where we shout 'OSU' on every ki-hon technique that we do. I never liked it.
When I started training we were taught to open our mouths and say 'HA' - the emphasis was on expelling all the air in your lungs by tensing your whole body and focusing on the hara. Vocal chords to be engaged as little as possible. I still do it the same way now and I find the shouting kiais (especially the high pitched ones) quite strange

With me, it seems to come out as 'thee', or sometimes even 'seei'. It's not a concious thing though.
When I first started, I asked Shihan to explain and he said 'Imagine someone sticking a knitting needle up your nostril!!" I started to get the idea then. Also we 'osu' in kihon, but I like the idea of 'Ha' for expelling the air. |

I've always thought that a kiai is anything you want it to be. If shiia, or seeya, or osu makes whatever you're doing that much stronger it can be whatever sound you want.
A kiai is your "gutteral yell" and no one elses. I don't think it's necessary to pick something. Just yell!! Osu!! |

So was I..and to yell as loud as you can will only mess with your oponnent's head, if that. Personally, I think that's silly to do in a kata. I make different kiais depending on how I'm striking or doing combinations(which I am 9 times out of 10).

Hmm... I think a well-done kata isn't the same without a well executed kiai.
