Don't actually know...but if he had, it would have been equally tragic....education is SUCH an unfair advantage in life...and a lack of it is a big disadvantage. Plenty of people overcome the disadvantage, but it is tough in todays world to get by without better than lower school/o level education.

He did go back with his other famous training partner to finish year 12 at a night school eqvilivent in 1993. So all was not lost. I am quite sure their Shihan made then complete this. |

I know it's a bit of topic and I don't know this kid but to clarify in the UK you complete you're GCSE's (used to be O'levels in my day) at 16 so he didn't drop out without any education, just opted out at the earliest opportunity, probably about 60% of UK kids do the same? and I completely agree this level of dedication he has shown to his art should see him try to pursue a higher education be it academic or practical, but hey he's 16, maybe he's gonna take a year out and come back to it, lets not right him off just yet, even if he's not Kyokushin

tmd -that is a good point...but he says he wants to be a police officer. Do the brits truly accept people with only GSCE into the police force?

6yrs seems to be pretty fast to get a 3rd Dan to me. Shouldn't it take at a minimum 3 yrs just to get to San Dan from Shodan.

mpeters
Sure its WAY to fast! Shodan to nidan in the IFK minimum 2 years and MUST be over 18, Nidan to Sandan minimum 3 years from getting nidan. Typically this process i find people tend to take about 10 years. The youngest sandan i know was 25.

Personally I'd rather have a 6ft plus 3rd Dan Copper breaking up fights in boozers than some degree educated wimp only good for dishing out speeding tickets, so I applaud his ambition but to be fair I think they prefer people over 20 which is maybe why he's just doing a shop job for now, so circulsar argument here maybe he should have stayed at school!!

Osu! TMD,
I'd rather they left the boozers well alone. ![]() That said, I'd take a Welsh coalminer over most of the toffs fast-tracked to the corridors of power. The best way for every lawmaker to determine the validity of the numerous laws they fiddle with is for them to spend a few weeks strolling the sights of touristy places like Southwark and Croydon in London; here, there and maybe everywhere in Nottingham, Liverpool and Glasgow. (The language in Glasgow could be considered a crime, but I didn't understand a word of it. First pub I went into, I thought the barman was choking. )Note to self: Way to stay on topic, D. Osu! |

![]() It is my honour to train under Shihan Gerry Bryan (9th Dan now) having brought this article to his attention he has instructed me to make a statement on his behalf. The Tsuyoi-Ryu of the aforementioned 3rd Dan is a "splinter group" and not to be confused with Traditional Tsuyoi-Ryu taught by Shihan Bryan. The head of this other school trained under Shihan Bryan to 3rd Dan before separating. Shihan Bryan merely wishes it noted that Traditional Tsuyoi-Ryu will not grade anyone under 16 to 1st Dan and a 16 year old 1st Dan upon reaching their 17th year will be required to grade again with full knockdown component. Failure at the grading, or failure to grade, the student in question would be demoted to 1st Kyu. I think that's the same for Kyokushin and in my opinion the right way. ![]() |

Thanks for the feedback Dan - I never got a chance to welcome you in the Intro thread so welcome.
I recall Tsuyoi Ryu fighters at BKK events in the 90s - great Fighters and hard as nails.

Hi Bloke thanks for the welcome, I must say I am very impressed with the calibre of karateka on this forum, what an excellent resource I have stumbled across. It's as close as I can get to training whilst sitting in my office at work!
I hope we can start entering those kind of events again in the medium future, I think it all got a little political at one point (as usual). I know we are doing some internal competitions and we also enter some IKO type events in Wales. |

I think there is a lot more co-operation between groups in the UK now than there used to be. The last British Regional in Milton Keynes last year had many outside groups.

From what I understand there is a big push right now for the UK to become more inclusive - can't say too much in case I'm not supposed to know what I know if you know what I mean, nod, nod, wink, wink.
