Well - if you were, for example, to wear a very flattering bear costume in your avatar, instead of having your photo - you could spill the beans with impunity, as noboby would ever be able to tell who you were

I think most people who know me could tell me by my posts or by the fact I didn't understand the log in system initially and used the wrong box for my code name

OK that's enough suspense - When I contacted Shihan Pickthall about the open training he asked for my Shihans contact details as he wants to try and bring all (interested) parties together for an all inclusive tournament, not one run by the BKK with anyone allowed to enter; ONE tournament for all to be involved in. Sounds like a move forward to me...

Tmd - if that happens its a major step forward - and after the build up that was not in any way dissapointing.

I am fortunate to be trained one on one by Gerry Bryan, 9th Dan Traditional Tsuyoi Ryu Karate in Pagham, West Sussex. He is the founder in the 70’s and recently was awarded his 9th Dan for commitment to Traditional karate. I was training with him today and told him about this article and would like to confirm the following.
Gerry trained many in Tsuyoi Karate and was proud to have done so. Gerry teaches traditional karate and therefore his style which is directly taught by him is known as Traditional Tsuyoi Ryu. Other versions of Tsuyoi Ryu are slightly commercial. Gerry is aware of the low age of this Dan grade and is confident in his skill However in Traditional Karate Gerry explained he would never give a Dan grade to an under 17 as the word DAN means MAN and normally these sort of grades should be awarded to students in their late 20’s. Gerry trains just a handful of students now and I consider myself very lucky to be taken on by him.

now that someone has derailed the thread back to the original topic i want to chime in on this kid getting a black belt - i dont see the problem.

i see a particular attitude is endemic to this forum in that people want everyone to grade the same way. my opinion is that, contrary to what our kindergarten teachers would have us believe, we are NOT equal. some of us are better at certain things and even fewer are prodigies in our respective fields. i think that as long as the senseis and the shihans the kid trains with are in agreement, his rank is fine by me.

maybe the arbitrary time limits on the ranks havent really affected any of you or anyone in your dojo but i find them flawed because they are holding my senpai back. im not going to get too much into the details but the long and short of it is that he was awarded a shodan, basically skipping a few ranks, after working with a very respected shihan in Japan yet our local shihans wont recognize the rank because he "got it too fast".

that kind of logic doesnt make sense to me and it never will. i get that the whole color of your belt shouldnt matter too much but i can only imagine how frustrating it is for senpai to be forced to wear a rank lower than he really is because it takes other people longer.

ironic how people striving to be fair causes them to end up enforcing unfair practices...

3rd dan at that age? Yeah, definitily woudn't fly in Kyokushin. I'm still a little iffy when it comes to junior shodans. But, atleast some Kyokushin organizations require junior shodans to retest when they become adults.

If he was an exceptional 16-year-old, I can see him getting Shodan, but Sandan? Is he qualified to open and run an independent Dojo? Can he develop and maintain training programs for all age groups? Does he have the maturity to complete not only the technical syllabus, but also the transmission thereof?

Each grade carries certain responsibilities, and the move from Sempai to Sensei is no small matter.

I have to agree with Dent here. The real issue is not a 16-year old gaining black belt (something I personally think is too early, but let's leave that for another thread) but that he has received 3rd Dan. Sandan comes with the title of Sensei, and should be reserved for those who have studied and teached in the art for many years, whom you expect to be a great source of wisdom and knowledge and who also posess exceptional skill and willpower. Grey hairs would not be amiss.

As mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I have nothing against young people who are higher ranked than me, nor do I have a problem with beeing taught by one. I just don't think a 16-year old has the maturity of a sensei.

Osu!

A sandan at that age, or even a nidan would make me seriously reconsider my mebership of that organisation....

Happens every day in the real world doesn't it?

This kid has talent - if he didn't and was clearly unfiit to wear the Belt I would not have posted this as it would not have raised discussion only scorn -he is a good BB - Nothing in the Vid would make me think exceptional but I have no idea of his pedigree of training, fighting, teaching etc, etc, it just struck me that there are a multitude of different practices for grading people out there and this seemed quick.

My youngest started Kyokushin at 5, it takes around 11 years on a straight time line to reach 3rd Dan so without any artificial age restrictions he too would be a 16 year old 3rd Dan Sensei - if he has a similar ability, attitude and maturity as my 16 year old daughter he will be a credit to the grade.

Some styles take 3 years to complete a BB, another year for 2nd and another year for 3rd so in these styles you could complete a 3rd Dan in 5 years - so someone starting at 11 would hold the same 'Rank', or another way to look at it would be an adult who passes the age test could have half the number of
