Osu!
I don't know about either too peaceful, or too aggressive, but I always aim to be focused. It doesn't pay to be distracted during Kumite. ![]() Osu!

I'm very peaceful when i fight.
I think i need more passion and intensity. Not to say i don't enjoy fighting, but i think too much. I think it is better to be aggressive but focused. Aggressive means you attack and block instinctively rather than defend and defend some more :P |

I prefer to flow naturally, I react to a kick or punch as I receive them. I try to be as peaceful as possible as to not burn out to quickly, but not peaceful enough to give the upper hand to my opponent. I've always looked at the best fighters for inspiration, and in my book, Kancho Shokei Matsui is right up there, and I try to imitate as much as possible. Hajime Kazumi also comes to mind, another calm yet sturdy fighter.

I think it depends on who your fighting, im naturaly very aggressive and preffer to push the pace of a fight. This is often effective for me, but one of my instructors is a very good counter fighter and he just picks me appart which can be very frustrating lol. I think its best to fight with intensity but try to remain emotionaly detached. Thats just how ifight best anyway.

OSU!..what i think needs to be considered is that no two fights are the same, so with this in mind, my opinion is to relax..keep your hands up and see what happens...................imo a good fighter has "no" frame of mind, he just concentrates and focuses on the fight and nothing else.

I would say that is my state of mind when sparring.. When fighting I could not tell you. |

Relaxed in defense , Intense in attack & focused, always focused.

For me, I'd say both. You shouldn't have all peace or all aggression as certain times require one or the other. I'll give an example for goju-ryu karate (what i study). Even though it's not meant to have too much contact, there are times when peace and aggression are required. For example, peace could be used for convserving more energy, such as when you're blocking or stepping to the side and hitting. Aggression would be when you've gotten past the opponent's guard somehow and now you're going at him.
I think it's important that for either state, you remain in control. By this, I mean if someone hits you, you don't try to "swing for the fences" and try to beat him to a pulp. I try to always remember that it's a sport, so the person across from you is your opponent NOT your enemy; in either case, yes you want to be victorious but if they're your opponent, you'll still want them to move around and you may help them up, however, if they were your enemy, you'd want them to not get up. In karate, judo, bjj, TKD, etc..., it's an opponent, so you want to remain in control and always have a balance of peace and aggression. A better idea is this. If aggression = darkness and peace = light, for there to be peace, there must be aggression; for there to be aggression, there must be peace.

It depends who I am practising with - if its younger or older students then I am more relaxed but against our younger fighters I have to be more focussed and on my guard.

I can only echo what has been said. I try to be relaxed and focused while fighting, and then try to be explosive when I see the opportunity for it.
