my hamstring injury
Hi, I just joined this site yesterday. Well, my problem is that I got this symptom in my right hamstring about 2 months ago. I first thought it was strain (pulled), but I now suspect it might be either the piriformis, or bursistis, or sciatica. I'm not specialized in medical field, so I'm not sure. But, it seems either bone or muscle is pressuring nerve or bursa; I know it sounds grotesque , but the epicenter of the pain might be right below the anus on the right side. The pain can reach from my right hip to above the back of knee on the right leg.
Basically, it hurts when I 1) kick forward (front-kick or ax-kick) above my face with my right leg, 2) kick backward or side (spinning back-, back-, side-, etc) higher than the waist with my left leg, and 3) do front-split with my right leg forward. Unfortunately, I can't afford any hospital since my health insurance is expired .Thank you all! ![]() |

Once your visa is granted, can you take a short trip home to get it checked out? Osu!

Hi, Dent! Thanks for your reply!

; if I have money to visit home, I'd rather stay there and apply for other visas, such as the Green Card.Wow, it really sounds like a excuse, but my financial or legal (visa) situation is really not that flexible. Well, I've been resting for while, and flexibility is coming back. Thanks, anyway! ![]() |

As a fellow foreigner in the US, I fully understand the difficulties with visas and the issuing organization. I also understand the financial situation of a recent graduate. Unfortunately, without significant health insurance in the US, it's a really bad idea to get sick, or get hurt. While many individuals are full of compassion, the system is not. I hope that your injury makes a full recovery soon. Osu!

From what you are saying, it sounds either like a nerve problem that stems from your back, or simply a problem with your hamstrings. If it is the hamstrings, then the pain would be sharp, hurts when stretching this muscle, hurts when contracting this muscle, hurts to the touch or pressure. If it is nerve, then any motion that stretches the hamstrings or curls your back (bend forward) may exacerbate the symptoms by making it travel further down, symptoms are more tingling, numbness, burning sensation, weakness in leg muscles.
As for now, unless you can go see an orthopaedist (or any doctor really), the only advice I can give is to rest and refrain from activities that makes the symptoms worse (the things that I described above if they fit you). But also stay active to maintain your fitness. And I totally agree with you guys on the terrible healthcare system in this country. The government would rather spend money killing people and letting people die at war than to help millions in the country that can't afford health insurance due to the rising costs in the competitive free market system that is definitely a failure. I'm studying to work in the healthcare field and topics on insurance is a big issue for the workers in the field too. |

What I don't understand is why it is so hard. Universal healthcare has been achieved by many nations, including some that are extremely poor. Mongolia recently introduced a system of universal healthcare coverage! But for the US - too hard. Something wrong there.

The US believes in a free market system and I don't want to go into politics but the Republicans always loves big businesses. I remember once looking at this handout given out in class that basically showed the different healthcare related state laws that the democrats were trying to pass (more geared towards universal healthcare) and 90% of them being or so being rejected by the republicans, where as the republicans were trying to pass things that benefited big businesses and made things harder for low-income and smaller businesses.

I'll believe that when Congress stops bailing out those big businesses in which they hold an interest. From big oil to trading houses and our current bail out of the moment, big lenders. Can we say, "Fannie Mae" and "Freddie Mac", class? IMO, Congress doesn't want universal care because the medical lobby is powerful enough, and wealthy enough, to grease the right palms. Osu!

I'm going to see a doctor who is specialized in sport this Thursday at the student health center at the university I attended. I have to pay $ 15, though, since I'm no longer a student . But, it's not too bad, right .![]() |

Unfortunately, Japan is trying to imitate the U.S system by reducing the universal healthcare benefit. According to the politicians from the leading party, we can't just afford it because of rapidly-increasing number of the elders who no longer have to pay the annuity (pension). Well, I rather tell these politicians to stop constructing too many useless, environment-destructing dams and highways that cost enormously. ![]() |

The medical result of my injury
So, today, I finally went to the doctor to check my injury. The doctor was a sport-specialized and did a series of physical tests and looked at the area. Well, according to him, it is more likely a strain, not a nerve- or bursa-related sympton (thank God). He said it seems the hamstring right under the pelvis. He just told me to decrease the intensity of dynamic (and static I assume) stretching and to strengthen the hamstring with light-weighted leg-swing machine (not the hamstring-curl). I also got prescription for some anti-inflammtion drug named <obic, which is similar to Ibuprophen but stronger. He said it should be well in a couple of weeks (of course with avoidance of intence activity).
So, I guess it was a good news ! If it was nerve or bursa, it might have required a shot or even a surgery. I'll take it easy and relax for a while.![]() Last edited by cochito; 07-24-2008 at 07:33 PM. |

At least now you have a professional's opinion on the subject, rather than a bunch of internet opinions!!
