Osu!

Nice clip there, Brian692. That yellow belt was more nervous than either of the main characters!

for a while there i thought i was gonna chime in with something new to the conversation but the ashtray and the jason bourne stuff kinda covered my opinion.

basically ive never been formally trained in any weapons but when i was in kung fu the sifu made it a real point to challenge our thought processes. he said he wanted us to be able to defend ourselves with anything available. kind of a 'your mind is your only weapon but the environment can be your tool' type of logic. with that firmly in mind im constantly spinning around brooms, sticks, pipes, wrenches, even twirling shirts into taught rope or whipping around my belt.

dont get me wrong, if im in a fight anytime soon i dont think im going to be pulling any Jackie Chan stuff on the guy but id like to think that if the opportunity presents itself i can take advantage of the environment to come out on top.

thinking about this now reminds me of a friend in high school. i made an offhand comment about a Judo move i could have done and my friend had me figured out right there and starkly states "you just go around looking at people and think 'i can hurt them this much if i do this' dont you?".... ah.... the days of being a young martial artist.

After working the doors here in Brisbane, Australia for a number of years, you get a fairly good appreciation for improvised weapons. I've been hit with bottles, glasses, pool cues, stools, billiards balls (thrown from accross the room!), bollards, shoes (watch out for high heels!), handbags, ash trays, and even a poster off the wall. The last one was a little confusing as it just kind of annoyed me. Nonetheless, these were mostly fairly effective weapons. Thankfully for me they didn't really know what to do after the first shot didn't drop me.

Now, having retired my security number for good, I've become a trainee instructor in Floro Fighting System. FFS is a system developed by world renowned knife fighter, Raymond Floro, based on the Filipino Martial Art of Kalis Illustrimo. Ray has an inovative style with both knives and stick but specialises in the use of improvised weapons. It's amazing what you can use to defend yourself.

Haven't trained any weapons in Kyokushin, but when I was doing jujutsu I did. Jo, bo, tanto, katana, yari, kusari fundo, and jutte. The ones I got real indepth with were jo, bo, tanto, and kusari fundo.

not trying to be offensive, but how does one become a world renowned knife fighter? has he seriously knifed a bunch of people? or has he just become known for defending himself in knife fights because thats a more common occurence in the phillipines?

Osu!

Sorry, I should have qualified that further. Ray developed his system and reputation through success in sporting knife contests, becoming a champion fencer and defending himself against numerous knife attacks while living and visiting the Phillipines. It didn't help that one of his masters lived in one of the worst slums on the islands.

Ray has developed his system based on the concepts of fencing and boxing incoporated into a symplified kalis illustrimo syllabus with a heavy emphasis on improvised weapons using anything from a water bottle to your credit card. His system is easy to learn and easy to apply under the high-stress environment of a knife attack. As such, Ray is now recognised as a subject matter experts and consultant for the Australian Defence Force and has developed edged weapons programs for a number of Australian and international police services. His highest profile job that I'm aware of has been training the Korean Special Forces in his brand of edged weapon survival.

Sorry to go into the sales pitch - Ray is a good friend of mine and I love talking about his system. It's pretty hard to beat for quick to learn, effective weapon work.

dont worry about it. im sure we all do it if someone asks us about Kyokushin.

and i see what you mean now. sorry if it sounded like i was calling you out or something. i was kinda curious. the concept of knife fighting is something ive always wanted to learn cause its a plausible threat in todays society but i often look at dojos that teach it with a lot of suspicion. not that i dont believe theres real techniques out there, just they usually try to throw in that they teach Jeet Kune Do in addition to a myriad of weapons etc etc...

Osu,

No problem at all. There are a lot of knife schools out there not based on reality, or worse, not taught by qualified people. The reason you see a lot of places teaching knife and JKD together is because of the Inosanto factor. After Bruce Lee's passing, Dan Inosanto (a filipino martial art master) started to incoporate all his FMA into JKD. Therefore you'll notice most of the JKD places around now are more or less FMA mixed with kickboxing and maybe some BJJ.

That said, there are a lot of good knife places around, but not many focus on ease-of-learning. I can't do 15 cuts in two seconds like some can, but I don't train to need 15 cuts either.

If you're interested in learning more about FFS please feel free to PM me or reply here, though I don't want to highjack this thread more than I have!

You could always start a thread devoted to the subject. This way we could all discuss and learn more about FFS.

osu-my old instructor, sensei dicko males now iko1 was adept with bo & nunchaku, he was always trying o get me to 'have a go'..... I just couldn't get on with the weapons thing... I always found karate hard enough to practise & didn't need any more diversions.
I did have a secret go with the nunchakus for a couple of months (with no observers)
just like bloke, I hit myself quite hard with them!..... but it wasn't the head-I could have sung soprano in the choir afterwards!! )
