back when I was doing point fighting (before Kykushin and Enshin), this was late 80's-- I used to do demostrations with a set of live Kama blades.

I studied endless hours of Tadashi Yamashita and his wonderful weopons work and then would practice in the back yard.

I only cut myself once, also. Left tricep with the blade in my right hand as I was swinging the blades across my body. It wasn't a bad cut, but it sure scarred up ugly.

In my single days I used to tell girls I was in a knife fight ;P
They thought that was sexy. ;D

I've done Kobudo for quite a few years - focusing mostly on the bo, tonfa and nunchaku. Done some bokken and sai but drew the line at kama and went no where near kusari kama.

Also done some Arnis training but fairly basic stuff.

Osu!

With so many positive answers, I have to ask: Does anyone else feel that the jointed weapons (Nunchaku/ Sansetsukon/ Suruchin etc) are as much of a danger to the wielder as they are to the attacker?

Shihan Jeff Whybrow came over here once and demonstrated Nunchaku and he was really good so I thought Ill give that a go and bought some from him - he used to make up his own and he had some intructional Videos out (Long before DVD).

Well after several months, a couple of broken lampshades and a head that was a field day for a phrenologist I called it quits - They were certainly a danger to me.

Yes if you don't know how to use them properly for fighting and have only trained for 'show'.

Aside from fairly basic Kiso Kumite, I've taken some time to try each of the above on tyres and trees. The bounce-back factor is so high, that it may be best to offer them to the other guy, and let him hurt himself for a while.

Oh, definitely! If they were easier to use, there would be more who have used them in battles; warriors rather used stable weapons, like spears and swords. Some consider nunchaku is somewhat inferior to other long weapons, and I think it might be true. Nunchaku definitely has some charisma, though.
BTW, I think they call it "nu'uchicku" in Okinawan. And, there are more than one theory for the origin of nunchaku in Okinawan Kobudo, so I don't know for sure.

As a slight aside but still on the weapons angle when the smoking ban came in here in Ireland I remember someone saying there is one less weapon to use - no more big glass ashtrays and that got me thinking waht else is around us everyday that we could use as a weapon.

They still serve beers in pint glasses don't they? Beter yet, order the pitcher.

One of the things I like about the "Jason Bourne" series in the theaters are the fight scenes where Bourne, played by Matt Damon, manages to find an improvised weapon to defeat his enemies who always have a superior looking weapon in hand. He used a rolled-up magazine in the second of the series and a book in the last. Way back in "Nikita", a pencil was used to impale a police officer's hand to a desk. It's fun contemplating improvised weaponry. In real life, I'll use my Nikes to beat a hasty retreat.

BTW, the fight scenes in the "Jason Bourne" series are based on Filipino Kali. According to the fight choreographer of the series Jeff Imada, "it is quick and efficient."
Yep, the edge of a rolled magazine is like a stone.

I was working on the door of a Pub one night - actually I was roaming inside but you get the idea. I saw a guy shove another guy from across the room and just as I got to them the first guy smashed his pint glass into the other guys face. It was one of the tulip type glasses - thin glass that just shredded the blokes face. The thing is that while it looked bad he was relatively unnaffected by it.

Osu! There you go, glasses with stems won't do. OTOH, if you're pouring the drink from a big bottle. . .

I've seen a woman fall with a wineglass still in hand. Both before the fall, and quite literally afterwards.

I have uploaded a short video of me using nunchaku at a demonstration on YouTube. Search for 'Kyokushin Karate Scotland Nunchaku' if you want to see it. I teach nunchaku once a month to students to give them something different to do.
