Has anyone learnt weapons?
Hi, there! I heard Kyokushin used to include weapons (I think nunchaku and bo staff) in its curriculum. Has anyone learnt weapons ? Of course, I don't mean just Kyokushin practitioners but everyone

The bo, nunchaks and sai are now back in the IKO Matsui-ha syllabus. So far I have only tried the 1st "Bo" kata.

Hi,
A few months ago we've tried the tonfa's. Just for fun. It's really hard to control them. I was happy we didn't try them on eachother. I think we could have gotten seriously hurt . I'd rather use my bare hands. Although I would like to learn how to defend myself againts a knife.![]() |

I taught myself Nunchuku many years ago. I was formerly training in Shinkendo(Shinkendo Japanese Swordsmanship and Aikido Dojo in Los Angeles) and I love using a Katana.
I want to learn Bo though. Looks like a great discipline! ![]()

Osu!
I have practiced Kobudo since the mid-80's. Early 90's I switched from the system I was with to Matayoshi Ryu Kobudo. I have found the practice both rewarding and frustrating. I wish more people were interested in Kobudo, but I suspect that it being less fun than Karate keeps many people away. Osu!

As we were affiliated with W.O.K.O.for many years, when they were still part of Kyokushin until the early 1990's, we studied weapons as part of the regular curriculum.
Now are not affiliated with that organization but we still continue our studies of Bo, Tonfa, and Nunchaku.BB study Sai as well. Weapons are started officially at 4th Kyu,but are taught to all at camps.

I have a shodan in Kendo as prescribed by the US Kendo Federation so I'm pretty good with a shinai. Although clearly not the same, I think I would be able to do a katana justice.

I self-taught nunchaku, a real one that I bought in Tijuana. I also have sais and bokken (wooden katana). Yet, I've never formally learnt weapons, though Shorinji Kempo has staff in curriculum for advanced students. Also, Aikido teaches bokken and jo (short stick) as well.
By the way, I didn't know that possession of nunchaku in California is illegal . Good thing I threw it away because it broke (I didn't know it was possible to break nunchaku). I think it's a stupid law, though, given that firearms are legal . ![]() |

I haven't done any weapons training during my Oyama training days...but i did train in them during my Aikido days...
I did Jo training (shorter version of a Bo) I did Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu (Mainly using a Bokken) I would love to further my training in Iai...and also learn Tameshigeri... Smoothsake-san: I have also done Kendo for some length of time...however, when i first picked up an Iai-to...it was a totally different experience. The weight, balance, and the basic air dynamics of a shin-ken...even if it was an Iai-to changed on how one grasped it, how you stand, and your hand movements. Because once you are cutting, even a slightest change in the blade's angle can make the whole cut change direction. I thought i knew what i was doing when i first grasped an Iai-to...but i looked like a spazz...lol.

Kansetsu,
I see what you mean. Did you do much training with the boken/bokuto when you were in Kendo? That definitely is a better representation of the sword than the shinai but yeah you're right... hard to copy weight/balance/etc. I think Iaido is much better if you want to learn how to handle a real sword, but that is something I will probably pick up when all my hair goes white. ![]() |

SmoothSake-San,
I did a lot of Bokken work, but like you said...i just doesn't compensate properly. I even had a bokken that was hand made by a guy who forges Katanas...and even then, it wasn't the same...lol. I don't know about waiting till you get white in your hair...lol. The first time i did Iaido, i was about 6 to 8 months into Kendo...and i hurt soooo bad the next day...i missed couple of classes...lol. OSU!

I have done 3 bo Kata that are part of IKO1 sylabus as well as various Bo techniques. I don't recall them all well since it was at a camp. We are also now going to be taught Tonfa and tonfa kata this summer which I am really looking forward to.
