I wonder.. how many people start taking martial arts classes with the goal of becoming a Sensei in front of their eyes? This article seems to be directed towards this kind of person.
I believe that they are a very rare case, and that most students start training for individual reasons, then, later on, they may chose to continue into attempting to make Martial arts instruction as a career.

Osu!

Yes, there are extensive obstacles/ opportunities, and the five outlined in the article are worth thinking about, but not losing sleep over.

Most of these places mentioned simply don't do it for the people looking for contact Karate. We have several in the area, and are simply non-entities for the schools with a more vigorous approach to training. If anything, all their work just makes it easier to find those with a passion, who have become disenchanted with paying wads of cash for a little flash...

How many of your students become black belts?
I heard from my shihan it's about 1 in a thousand.

I laughed out loud when I read the bit 'consider doing a few gradings before you become a professional'. Spooky.

Osu!,

All very interesting! I have trained with some of what I refer to as 'fastfood' martial arts. Quite frankly, I train to learn, to break a sweat or to do both! One wonders what is becoming of martial arts, when a brown belt is out of breath & complaining after 10 press ups or 10 kicks on a pad...However, when a dojo has a reputation for training hard, it may remain small, but it will attract those who wish to achieve!

Quite right, JimmyLad! I find it interesting that according to Miyagi AnIchi Sensei, back in the day, Miyagi Chojun Sensei would challenge prospective students by asking them what sort of training they wanted to do. Folk training, entertainment training, or real training. And this in in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

I do think that a good Dojo can attract many people, and teach them real martial arts. It may not be the 2000 spoken of in the article, but 200 strong members is a very real possibility.

If you're teaching in an alley, you may get some very interesting students!

Osu!

I find the idea of choosing teaching Karate as a career path a little odd at the best of times, and before even making Shodan?

I guess that some folk are just better organized.

Shamo, I think your question is better aimed at those actual Sensei who have their own Dojo. My small group doesn't count as that yet.

Maybe I'll put up a thread on your behalf with just that subject.

Osu!
