Osu from Finland
Osu!
I have been lurking around here for a while. I don't really feel like working now so I'll use the time to introduce myself. ![]() I train Ashihara karate in the Sabaki-do group here in Helsinki. I have been training for some 5 years now. Before Ashihara I had a few years break. Before the break I trained and competed in judo and trained some gensei-ryu karate aside. Recently I have added some traditional Shorin ryu Seibukan karate to my schedule too. Lately I visited a nearby kyokushin dojo and I'm planning to spar and train with the guys there every once in a while. Despite my flings with other arts Ashihara remains #1 for me. |

Welcome to the forums, Markku.
Have you noticed any big differences between Kyokushin, Ashihara, and Shorin Karate? |

Well I have only been to two kyokushin trainings so I may not be the right person to answer the question about kyokushin and ashihara. Member jolut might have a "slightly" better understanding than me...
![]() Shorin ryu training is very different from the other two. Less kumite and more kata & kihon. What I like about shorin ryu is that everything is connected (kata, kihon etc.). The saying "karate is kata" is really present there. We do a lot of bunkai right from the beginning. And the bunkai is original, just the way Kyan Chotoku taught it. Very simple and effective stuff actually. The training culture seems to be quite different. People in shorin ryu aren't really pushing it to the limits like they do in kyokushin and ashihara. This is just my opinion (i may have to change it), remember that I'm only a beginner in shorin ryu too. |
