Kyokushin Kanji VS IchiGeki Kanji
Osu.
Is there somebody out there that could tell me if the Kyokushin Kanji and the IchiGeki Kanji ( on the left chest) as being used by Kancho Matsui is the same. If not could you please tell me what is the english translation of both. Look at IchiGeki online shop and have a look at the IchiGeki Gi and the Kanji with the Kanku. Your responses would be appreciated. Thanks |

Thanks for the response. You are correct that the IchiGeki Kanji is on the left arm. However, please look closely at the Kanji on the left chest and compare with the "normal" kyokushin kanji. Do you see a difference? Thanks |

Dear reagan,
Could you further explain your question? I guess in your first question you are asking the differences between "Ichigeki Kanji" and "Kyokushin Kanji", while in your last message you were pointing out the differences between versions of "Kyokushin Kanji"? OSU!

Welcome to the Forum. Please tell us a little about yourself. I'm sure that, if possible, your question will be answered on the general thread you started. Osu!

No offense, let me try again. If you "google- kyokushin kanji, you will get the kyokushin kanji that i am sure we are all familiar with. If one compares this kanji with the one that appears on the IchiGeki Gi, there are definite differences. It is for this reason that I referred to it as the "IchiGeki" Kanji as it is not the same as the Kyokushin Kanji although if you do not focus, you may think it is the same. I was once told by a Japanese person that one must be careful with kanji characters, as one small difference, may change the meaning altogether. If this is true, I ask the question: is the Calligraphy on the IchiGeki Gi Kyokushinkai or something else. It might be true that you have seen many different Kyokushin Kanji. I would argue that IKO1 would only have one such version! Who am I. I train Kyokushin Karate. Osu. |

Your message is now clear (you should not have simply used the word "Ichigeki Kanji" without much explanation). There are only subtle differences in design, in this case absolutely no change to meaning, Kyokushinkai all the same. By the way Dent's invitation to a self-introduction is only a tradition of our forums, not specifically related to the question you ask. And just a friendly reminder, it is not advisable to double-post in different sections (it simply draws less attention). OSU!

By "normal" Kyokushin kanji, do you mean the kanji used on the Isami gi versus the kanji used on the IKO1 Ichigeki gi?? Well there is a slight difference in the script used. I have both gis and the Isami gi kanji threading is a bit thicker and wider. The Ichigeki gi has a thiner stroke... The kanji is still the same -- just different stroke style. If that doesn't answer your question you're going to have to better elaborate what you are asking.

Thanks.
I am from South Africa and train /teach Kyokushin Karate full-time. I am in the Cape Town area, near Table Mountain. I hold the rank of Sandan in IKO1. Trust this is OK. Need more, please ask. I still wonder why Matsui Kancho would introduce those "subtle" differences. Maybe I must ask him- LOL Thanks and Osu |

Dear reagan,
Welcome and glad to see your question answered. And sorry for the misunderstanding of your initial queston. By the way I do not think there is a specific introduction of one single version of the Kanji for any organization, as I have seen even within one organization, there are people wearing different versions (like you said many people do not care about the differences, both good and bad thing). OSU!

Hi Smoothsake.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Yes, you could say that. Maybe I am seeing things that's not there. I have the original IchiGeki Gi from Japan and have used the "normal" Kanji all the years. On closer inspection, I thought the two are very different. Are there any Japanese persons that could comment with authority on the subject? If you are Japanese, I apologise and will leave it at that. Osu. |

Osu!
Reagan, I think we know each other. Is it possible that you were at the last two World Tournaments?I also think I know what you mean by the differences. The Kanji may appear a little different, but think of this method of writing more like cursive than block capitals. There is some room for style. The word and meaning are the same, but the handwriting is different. Now that we are also way past our number of posts for an intro thread, I will close this one, and encourage everyone to continue in the General Forum. Osu!
