OSU from Copenhagen
Hi all!
I have been around the forums a bit for the last few months, but i havent actually posted anything - yet. I figured this would be a good time to do it, so here's a little introduction. I am a big guy. Im tall, thankfully, but quite packed with those lumps that are not muscles. Ive tried diets, gyms, starvation - you know, the works - but i havent had any luck with finding something i could stick to. I have always had a nice eye for martial arts, so three months ago i started training Kyokushin at Glentevej in Copenhagen, Denmark. First day was hard. Second day was hard. Third day was hard, but not *as hard* as the previous. Very rapidly i found my health and condition improving. I must stress that i am in no way fit, and i am a very heavy man, yet here i saw a fast increase in what i was able to do. I havent gotten smaller visibly (although close relatives and friends claim that my face is shrinking) and i think i am actually putting on more muscle than im losing fat, but i can *feel* the change. First warm up had me panting for air for an hour - now i get my pulse up, and calm down between sets. Over three months, my energy has gone up, my mood has been even brighter than usual, and i have this constant surge of energy that makes me want to - do something. Top that off with being in a great competative sport that teaches me control of my body, discipline, and strengthens my mind, body and new friendship, and things are just awesome. I started three months ago. Yesterday, i passed my first grading, and i am now very anxious to wear my new belt tomorrow. It might seem trivial to many, seeing 10th kyu as an easy step - but for me, its a huge step towards a new lifestyle. Thank you for reading in on my story. To be continued ![]() ![]() |

Osu Quieth,
Very nice write-up! A friend once said that the most important gradings where the first, and the shodan grading. It's satisfying to know you are no white-belt anymore. ![]() BTW, I thought the dojo on Glentevej was affiliated with WKO? I wish you good spirit. Osu, ~ Nix

![]() The orange belt means a tad more to me than others, perhaps. No doub my fellow white belts were excited, but they arent excactly the same size as i am. It doesn't bum me down though - my view on the matter is that i just have a bit further to go and thus must put more effort into it! We have some great senpais, and i think they know that i keep going until i drop - thats my mindset at least. Im not at all trying to use my size as a bad excuse (because quite frankly, if i wanted to do that, i would have picked snooker instead of kyokushin ) but i hope that people see me as the big guy that tries, and not the big guy that cant do everything ![]() |

I too was in Copenhagen last month. Beautiful city - seriously reminded me of Beverly Hills. I had too much fun there, and if it wasn't for the $30USD long island ice teas at Emma, I think I'd move there in a heartbeat.
Don't let your size deter you. Stretch and work on resistance training (sit ups, squats, push ups, pull ups, etc) and you will see your weight drop, muscle mass improve, and stamina supercharge. The techniques will come, give it time. Pretty soon you'll be fighting in the [super] heavyweight divisions. Osu! |

And I might be refereeing at a tournament in Copenhagen later this month.
I quite like Copenhagen.Alas, I must digress. However fine Copenhagen is, I still need to close this thread as it has reached the limit. But do keep us posted, it sounds to me like you have the right mindset. Osu, ~ Nix
