Osu,
I know that we add the word san or sama to a name. But can anyone tell me if this can also be use behind a woman's name? Or is it only used for men? For Example: Can you say Lucy-san? Or is there a specific word for females? ![]()

Amongst kids 'san' is generally only used for girls, and boys use 'kun'. As they grow older they tend to use 'san' for both men and women. For example, kohai calls senpai '??? san' to show a kind of respect.(also calling elders ??? san)

Question, if you don't know the person or don't know them well you only use their last name with san .
If you are friends then and only then, you use san with their first name? |

We write "sama" for writing names when sending letters as well.Jap man san, Yes what you said is correct. If you are really close friends with female then you may call their name with 'chan'. For example, a girl may call me 'daisuke chan'. Well mostly they call me 'dai chan', a shortened version. Last edited by nzproud; 08-21-2007 at 12:07 PM. |

nzproud is from New Zealand.
Would it be inappropriate or odd to just use first_name-kun amongst mature friends? That is, could that be used informally when talking to adult friends? Last edited by Satori; 08-21-2007 at 12:58 PM. |

I wouldn't recommend first_name-kun amongst adults....the only time you really see that, is if the they have been friends for a LONG time, and it has just kind of stuck from when they were children.
With my friends in Japan, I know when I met them, because I went through several different phases of names that people called me!!! Started out with an abbrieviation of my last name + chan Then graduated to my first name + san Then just went to my first name- where the emphasis was on the last sound... Now it is usually just my first name (no san!!) vapor |

Japanese honorific titiles are very hard to get correct for gaijin, so a good rule of thumb is just to use last name-san until the other person asks you to call them something else. It is considered a step up in a relationship if a man or woman asks you to drop the -san or call them by their first name-san or just first name or nickname or whatever. It is equivalent to calling someone Mr. Clinton, then calling someone William, and then finally Bill, or maybe just B. Get it?
The same goes for women. |

Incorrect. Nzproud is a New Zealander who lives in New Zealand but he was not born there.
He is from elsewhere!!Mind you, rising suns and long white clouds do go together quite nicely. ![]()
