are you quizing me ??

ok the three words them self would be ichi = we all know that means one, mishi = way or path kindda like the word DO, issho = i know ther is more then one meanning to this one but i would think the correct one in this case would be: a lifetime.

a was taught that the meanning of the full phrase could be translate into : one day, one life.

my dear kakatootoshi have i been fooled ?

Dear mary222,
I am not quizing you and I really could not understand your original sentence. Japanese is different from English. Now with the explanation I think it should be "Ichi Nichi Issho".

The kanji is 一日一生.

I'm no expert, but doesn't it say "Ichi Nichi Ichi Issho"? Details, I know, but I assume the girl want it right (could be for a tattoo, or whatever).

EDIT: Then again, "Ichi Geki Hissatsu" means "One punch, one kill". Now I've confused myself! Please, somebody unconfuse me!

Dear Nix,
Sorry I do not understand. Do you mean "一日一生" should be pronounced as "Ichi Nichi Ichi Issho" or "Ichi Nichi Ichi Issho" is the correct pronounciation of the idiom explained by mary222?

Are you looking for the kanji?

well I am not an expert Nix, but first kanji is ichi, then no 2 is ni like in nippon or nihon (japan) no 3 again ichi. So no 2 and 3 = nichi

kakatootoshi,

No, no I was not trying to correct, I was merely curious. The kanji you provided had four characters, yet the actual pronounciation had only three words. I noticed that two of the characters were the same, and as far as I know would translate to "ichi". So in other words, my logic tells me that the kanji reads "Ichi Nichi Ichi Issho". I understand that Japanese is different from English, and that the kanji do not always read as they are written.

I think jolut has cracked the nut, here. The two kanji combine to form one word. Thank you both, I think I get it now.

Dear joult,
No. The "ichi" part in "nichi" has totally nothing do with "ichi".

Dear Nix,
"Ichi" the first word, "Nichi" the second word, "Issho" the third and the fourth word.

I can only say that you cannot break and then piece the kanji together. If the English word "apple" is translated as "red fruit" in your language, you cannot ask if "ap" means red and "ple" means "fruit".

Dear mary222,

"Michi" (not Mishi) does mean "way" (actually the same kanji as "Do", just different pronounciations under different circumstances). But how come "Michi" would become suddenly "Day" in your original translation? And even if there is such idiom as "Ichi Michi Issho", it should be pronounced as "Ichido Issho". But try google "Ichido Issho" (in Japanese kanji, so it does not matter how you prononuce it) you will find nothing. On the other hand I am curious to know where did you find "Ichi Mishi (mishearing of Michi) Issho" at the first place.

OSU!

That is an excellent example for us to use! Sometimes it can be tough to explain the use of Kanji to those who have no idea of pictograms.

Thank you!

That is a funny link. Just yesterday at the car wash I saw a guy sporting a kanji tattoo and it both made my fiance and I laugh out loud. It said literally, "Water fire eat death." I highly recommend anyone who is going to have kanji on their bodies to have it double checked and inked by a local (the strokes ARE important).
