Straight from the dictionary:

ゼッケン
(n) cloth bib with number or logo worn by athletes, etc. (e.g. over their shirts)

The most common use of the word (according to the first few hits on google) seem to be in kendo, where it shows your name and dojo/country.

In Kyokushin circles, zekken is the numbered patch, traditionally a cotton square but increasingly a paper/non-woven sticker affixed to the back of the dogi during competition.

I was able to collect the fabric zekken from the tournaments I entered. They each had their stories about occassional victories and numerous defeats. With the switch to not so sticky, sticky zekken, I lost a convenient mnemonic.
