Favourite kata and why ?
I thought it woud be nice to open up the kata discussions with a nice question!
What's your favourite kata and why ? Hmm, it's a hard one but my favourite kata is Sanchin no kata! It's the oldest kata going, it's hard and strong! all good things come in three's and this kata is 'three battles' 'three points' 'three phases' Its where you can learn good breathing, technique and power. Just like the unification of Mind, Body and Spirit your use your mind in the visulisation of the ki flowing in and out your body as you ibuki. You us your body because when your breathing moving and using power. And you use your spirit in connection with the body and mind. It's my favourite kata because it's the only kata that absolutly tires me out after doing it, it makes you feel really strong and a good loud ibuki lets me express myslef.

i like tensho kata...and the reason is just because our sosai too liked it a lot..it seems he used to practise it many times a day..so i too do it..i really feel good after practising it, it's something like an inspiration...OSU

sosai said that if a person practiced tensho thousands of times that this person might block any attack ,it is one of my favs along with seinchen&yansu osu!!!

I love sanchin for the feeling of power you get while doing it, and the knowledge you've worked after you've done it...
but I have to agree with the majority thus far and say Tensho is my absolute favourite, largely due to the fact that I never fail to create a very peaceful, focussed mind when I do it...it's just very powerful. the pinan katas gave me a lot of trouble at first, 'cuz I did Shotokan in high school and the similarity to the Heian katas was troublesome.

Taikyoku Ichi is my favorite kata. Second is a tie between Tensho and Sanchin.

I'm a big fan of Sanchin due to my little bit of goju-ryu experience, but Tensho is badass too. Third would have to be Pinan Sono Ni, simply because it's different from all the other kata I've learned so far.

Kanku, Seienchin or Geksai-Sho in no order (though I secretly like Pinan sono san & yon)
Since I'm tall these kata's fit my size best and I flow when doing them. It is said that once you reach Dan you should find a kata or two that best fits you (size/body) and focus on them to master (still doing all kata) |

I used to like sushiho a lot because there was so much in it, but since a year or 2 i am more into seipai. I like the opening of geksai sho because of the rythm.
Biggest dislikes: garyu and pinan ni in ura. Garyu because i am not really a really-flexy-lightweight-like kinda person and pinan ni in ura because of the opening. Been working on that opening for the last few months quite intensively and its still not nearly to my liking.

i like seiunchin, contains a lot of great moves and a ton of techniques. Tensho and Sanchin because i like to feel the ki flow around my body.

Tensho! no crystal-clear reason why i like it..
i guess its because its harder than the rest i know (i'm still a junior kyu tho i am trying to learn Sanchin) and the limited space i need to do it in.i do feel great and focused during and after it, i try to do it twice in succession, first time "properly", and the second with 3kg wrist/ankle weights on..

My favourite kata was and is going to be (no matter that I am into Daido Juku Kudo now) Seienchin. The specific thing in this kata is the transition between kiba dachi and kokutso dachi. Very good incooperation with moro ashi dachi. The movement and teh sense of it. The balance that is developed is very simillar to the most efficient thing a person can gain from Kyokushin. Many can be gained from the style but the sense from this kata is directly used in the specific Kyokushin kumite.
Also very good for the breathing are seienchin and tensho. Still there is more in them but... |

I enjoy Tsuki no Kata the best at this point in my journey. I love the strength, explosiveness, and balance that it has. In fact, to me, the kata seems to end too quickly.

I love doing basai dai, really get into it concentrating really hard to improve each time. Like others have said, I really don't know why, I haven't analysed it.
I think my favourite to watch is gekisai sho, I'm not so good at yoko geris but watching a whole class practicing for a demo in Manila was fantastic, I was in awe! Are these people flexible or what?? I think they were a bit amazed at me too. They didn't think such stiff people existed!!! lol. |

I love...tsuki-no, yantsu, seienchin and gekusai sho.
Tsuki-no - because of its explosive strenght and power, and the dynamism of the turns. Yantsu - because of the quirky hand movements with cool bunkai (and because by the time I got to learn it I was so sick of H-pattern kata). Seienchin... well, you guys don't have time to read all I would write about the kata that I take as my name...but a few points - it is expressive, artistic, strong, variable in tempo, lots of groovy moves and bunkai, and I just never ever get bored of practising it. If I could only do one kata for the rest of my life this would be it. Gekusai sho- I love variations and angles in this, and the nice twisting take-down move at the end. Just as well I don't have to choose! ![]() |

siafah kata is my favourite because it goes so soft and slow then all of a sudden you dop that oroshi move when you turn round and stamp into sanchindachi but i also really like pinan sunno go because of all the jumping and lso yantsu is a favourite

Gekisai sho and Sushiho are my favourites!!
I like the Goju version of Seienchin. Also Pinan Ni has its appeal ... can't really put my finger on it, the first sequence of the kata (before the yoko geri) is fantastic!!
