Shotokan Katas and kyokushin..
2 different styles of karate, but some katas are somewhat quite similar.
I havn't actually seen shotokan katas for a while but I quite liked how they did their kata compared to kyokushin katas. Discuss.. Taikyoku no1

I have been training directly with Shotokan people for over 30 years (direct training with Japanese instructor who was a student of Obata who was Funakoshi senior student. Obata is the tail guy in Funakoshi's books)
I often see great deals of differences how they do, teach the kata among the japanese instructors. One thing I do notice is they continue to take the idea that kata should always change and evolve and they do change the katas often as needed, unlike the JKA shtokan. nzproud, Do you know the Kyokushin version of, Bassai Dai, and Kanku Sho katas??? |

It is the same with the Kyokushin from what i see. When i was with Shihan Oliver, we performed kata different from what i see today with the Matsui clan. Kata seemed more explosive the way we performed them in the 70's and 80's.

I come from a NKF shotokan dojo, I disagree personally with their idea of "kumite" and the way they judge kata, but I do agree with my sensei's ideals.
He is more of a bunkai/application of kata, and agrees it should change as the times. But where he and I agree is how the aesthetic appeals used to judge are warping the original intent (self-defense). Compare Luca Valdesi a decorated competition kata practitioner's kata. To my idol, Kanazawa's kata No doubt Luca's kata is very quick and pleasing, I think that some of the meanings are changing too dramatically *side rant* Point sparring is nothing like a fight, too many people who are good at point sparring think that it'll transfer on. Soon the sport aspect will overcome the martial. Hopefully though, enough people will realize the necessity for knockout in actual application and practical purposes Last edited by chen3141; 12-11-2007 at 05:33 AM. Reason: To improve my writing |
