pinan sono san ura
I grade for brown belt in 2 months time and am having difficulty with the movements in pinan 3 ura with the ushiro mawashi/yoko geri combination. I know that the kicks don't need to be high, but I still find it tough. All help appreciated. Osu!

Could you take the exam at a different time and date? If so how long would you have to wait for the next test? This are some of the questions that come to mind. I understand that you been given the opportunity to test for a very high grade and is like now or never. And what you really want is some advise to pass the test. So what are you going to do once you get to the end of the journey that you have taken, then what? Just go and retired like so many people who achieve shodan do? If you are having that much difficulty with a kata and then you are under the pressure of testing in two months, let me tell you right here and now, YOU ARE NOT READY!!! Save your exam money and relax. Take the time to really learn the kata, the why's and how's. So many times we begin journeys in trying to get to a destination. All through the journey we hurry and rush to get to the end. And when we get to the end, what do we find? That what we should have been looking for was thru the trip that we had taken not at the destination. In other words enjoy the time you spend in training 'cause when is over you will never have the opportunity again. |

^ well there's that
or alternatively: make sure you are retracting your leg after the ushiro mawashi geri, if your finding yourself unbalanced then this could be the reason your struggling with that particular kick combo.. practice ushiro mawashi geri by itself, remembering to retract, then when your stable enough like that, add the yoko geri OSU

2 months before grading... sounds like you have a lot of time to get your stuff down....
You can always tell your sensei that you arent ready the week before the grading and practise hard untill then.... giving up 2 months up front doesnt seem like the way to go.... Just train hard,.. see where you end up and then make a decission.... Osu Ksan

Thanks for advice, that is why I posted.
When I was at college I found it benificial to hear from different lecturers, read varied texts on subjects to arrive at a healthy concensus. I am still hopeful of finding similar outcomes here too. Perhaps I have not made myself clear, but will attempt to now. I am not desperate to grade, I have missed grading chances before. I could have another chance 7 months later, so, no I don't NEED to do it now, but as I will do it sometime, why not now?!? Just because there's room for improvement on 1 part of 1 kata? If that was the yardstick, who would ever be ready for any grading?? The instructor (Shihan Marlborough) has never let anyone to my knowledge grade before they were good and ready. As Ksan says, 2 months is a long time to improve these techniques. Anyway, enough said. Keep the advice coming please, appreciated. Osu! |

Just an update to say I passed my grading at our summer camp at the weekend. That was the toughest camp I have experienced, I'm still tired!
p.s. sorry I've not posted for a while. I've been doing private jobs as well as my regular work. In May, I literally never had an hour to myself. Hope it all calms down soon. OSU! |

There's an ushiro geri and yoko geri in pinan sono san??? I thought ura doesn't change the kata, it's just the transition steps that are "reversed". Are you talking about a different kata or is there a special "pinan sono san ura with ushiro mawashi/yoko geri combination" that is a deviation from the standard pinan (like the kicking taikyoku)?

Osu Satori, you would still "stomp". Thanks for your interest anyway, I realise through this site that there is a lot of variations in different organisations.
When I read about the requirements for gradings from members here, I realised the big differences too. For 2nd kyu I had been practising 27 katas in total : Taikyoko 1,2,3 +3 uras+3 kicking; 5 pinans + uras; sanchin, yantsu, tsuki no, gekisai dai+ sho, tensho and the first 2 teki katas. There is a bit of give and take here as we are still really in the transition to this new syllabus. Oh, nearly forgot. I think the 1st bo kata is also for this level too. |

By the way, we only do 5 kumite fights for 2nd kyu, 10 for 1st + 20 for shodan. I graded for 4th kyu in Manila and the requirement was 5 fights there!
Just goes to show that there can be local differences even within the same organisation!! |

Osu DKKC,
the first teki is similar to shotokan, but the others aren't really. They're all on youtube, follow Eamon's link above which will lead you to others. These katas are being gradually introduced into the syllabus. osu! |

I should have added for anyone who looks at these, that like in all styles, the tekis haven't much grace or finesse. They are very strong , brutal kata. Osu!

Thank you very much for the info and the link!! I've learnt the Shotokan version of Tekki Shodan and Nidan - never knew Kyokushin has them as well.
Cheers!!
