I was always taught that there was 1 kiai, which takes place with the first head punch during the 3 punch combo. This is before the koken blocks & strike. Then you pound the chest (just below), move the back foot across & turn 180.

Osu!
This is the official IKO1 version: If I was restricted to a single breath, I think you can see why I'd probably pass out before hearing the Yame! (Might explain the need for a shot of adrenalin afterwards though! )Osu!

is a chinese based kata [white crane etc...] and thus it uses many strikes to the general same area quickly done. As for the kiai, done [as we know it] is on all 3 punches done on both side As for striking ones self in this kata un-hear of |

Indeed, when I first learned this kata in the late 1980s, it and a number of other kata had prolonged kiai that were stretched over a series of punches.
around 1989 (I think), that was changed, and we were taught that the whole idea of a kiai was to be a short and very forceful explosion of Chi. So ever since then, I have only kiaied on the last punch each side. History is interesting, but I am now in the position of being able to choose not to change my kata any more. I have decided to become a living dinosaur, so that in the future, little children can point and me and be told by their parents that this is how kata looked "in the olden days". ![]()
