Also don't forget that other styles practice many of the same kata we do.

Now I'm not saying that the different movements or timing should be copied, but in the study of kata I think it's beneficial to look at the alternative ways it is done.

something that judges look for is wether or not you are ''living'' your kata. have the correct mouvement is the first step but there is something more about kata than a series of movement it must look and feel like a fight. an easy way to do this is to always look before you move if you are going left look left then move etc...

I am not a judge of kata, but I have often been told by my sempai and sensei that some of the most important things to remember are:

Focus and concentration.
Long stances and technique - Over exaggerate everything - take the scenic route
Snap and power (your gi should crack)
Loud powerful kiai
and as has already been mentioned, this is a show case for you. Let everyone know who you are and how good you are by giving 150%

To expand on this a little bit, seems to me a lot of people don't understand sharp technique - that is, it should start and stop precisely with no extra movement at the end.

A lot of people I've seen try to apply speed to their techniques and it comes out very sloppy which means they have not mastered the basic mechanics of the techniques. So more training but at less speed to get that muscle memory happening...

Also if you don't have a video camera mirrors are still a great help!
