Sanchin no Kata dangerous for kids?
Does anybody know if medical reasons interdict the practice Sanchin Kata and Ibuki to kids less than 14 years of age?

Hi Martelo or lilike we say in the laguage of the great Camões....Oi como está?..Tudo bem?.
Since here is an international forum....we must have this conversation in English....heheheh
Well....I'm not a doctor....but I don't think that Sanshin is very good for kids...because all the contitioning envolved is too extreme, and because I don't think the kids have the maturity to develop the skills properly before age of 14.
I think the same about full contact maches among kids. In our dojo, we do kumite all the time with the kids.....but I always let then kick the c*** out of me and show then their mistakes.

Ossu!!! and Até logo caro irmão lusitano.

I think that kids can do the Kata, just not 100%, including the Ibuki. As a basic valsalva maneuver, there is some question whether any of us should be trying to bust a lung...?

Ibuki is not valsalva maneuver, but tandem breathing. To avoid hypertension, when you breath, you never cut the flux of air. Breathing is constant. It is true that there are very bad versions of sanchin kata, and horrible ideas about ibuki, including people that stop breathing while applying extreme pulmonar tension and doing valsalva maneuver. Well, that is wrong.

I tried to post some links, but the forum doesn't allow me to do that because I haven't posted 15 messages yet. I will try to send them to you privately.

I have taught many, many children to do sanchin including with ibuki. (youngest was 5 years old) I cannot think of any reason why it would be contra-indicated. Their ibuki initially is a bit of a gurgle, but as they grow in strength and resilience, so too does their ibuki.

Thanks a lot AE. You just confirm with the articles that you sent me that Ibuki could be dangerous if not done properly.
Is not an easy task to teach it to children (I think is almost impossible to then to grasp the concepts of Ibuki breathing) and also the principles associated to the contraction and relax of body muscles involved in Sanchin No Kata, etc.
Despite looking very easy to perform Sanchin No Kata is a really difficult one…I think that we could teach the kids to do the moves but teach the fine points of Kata are a different thing.
Thank you for your contribute, I‘ll post the links that you sent me to share with everybody,

Olá irmão Brazilian Berseker.
Hello Brazilian Berseker brother.
I’ll use both languages: Shakespeare and Camões idioms…
Tudo bem por aí?
How are you?
Nós também fazemos Sanchin no Kata com as crianças, mas temos cuidado com alguns aspectos! O Kumite pleno contacto é também encorajado...com as respectivas protecções.
Yes, our kids also do Sanchin no Kata (but not Ibuki). And yes again, they do full contact Kumite, but with protections.
O problema não está na maturidade das crianças mas sim na capacidade do seu corpo poder ou não realizar essas coisas.
A kid with could 14 have maturity but is body and internal organs are not fully developed.
Um abraço e OSU!
Regards and OSU!

We don't teach it to underage kids, but I really don't know the medical reasons. What I know is that sanchin kata is related to breathing control, and the breathing control concept comes from qigong. So the answer may be in a qigong book, although I recognize that not everybody is willing to accept qigong as a valid theory of the human body.
