K-1 getting younger
K-1 producer Tanigawa Sadaharu announced on 5/29 that an exhibition match between elementary students.
There will be four fighters from 8-9. Rules are not set yet, but they will wear face masks and no head punches allowed. Each round will last 1 min 30 secs. Last year Fujitukasa, a junior high student was prevented from fighting in a K-1 event due to employment regulations. It is said that since no employment is involved this time, there will not be such troubles for these kids. Just at the middle of May Tanigawa announced the start of "K-1 Koshien", a K-1 event which divide high school participants from all over the country into 5 blocks. The final 4 will fight in a special tournament. OSU!

I don't have a good feeling about this....elementary school kids?
I see backlash from the media and the public, which is probably deserved... Seems like exploitation, to make money... vapor

i dont say its right to let kids fight at that age ! but some country's its verry normal to let kids fight at the age ! think of thailand , they start verry young ! because its there national sport there verry proud of it. few weeks ago i read the news paper and they told that england also did muay thai matchs with verry young kids , did also see a youtupe video kyokushin vs sanda ( japan vs china ) also 2 kids fighting ! it was tv specail.
verry strange!!!

I'm torn on this. I did amateur boxing, Karate competition and Judo comps from the same age. Somebody was making money, but for me it was just the opportunity. Is it so different now? Osu!

osu dent!...i am torn on this as well. two ways of thinking...............
1] these kids are just too young for this sort of thing? 2] now from the kids point of view....i really want to do this, this is making me popular with other kids, i`m not getting bullied.....this is giving me confidence which in return will help my academic achievements....i`m getting a form of discipline which will help me through adolescence and all of it`s problems and i am really fit and good about myself, this is going to help me in later life..etc;etc.... |

except that now I have a cumulative concussive brain damage, because my growing brain was a bit to soft to take the punishment, even with headgear on...so my academic achievements are just a distant memory...that I have actually forgotten because I have amnesia as well....

Oh yeah Dent, I meant to remind you. when we met in NYC, you told me to remind you once a week that you have a PhD. You wouldn't say what it was in, but you said "It's Not Rocket Science"

you make a fair point however, we have had junior boxing with protection for many years and i haven`t heard of any long term problems, i am aware a kick can be five times more powerful than a punch so it looks like i am bowing to your superior knowledge[this time ]...this is a homer simpson situation,i`ve been proven wrong and now i`m rambling!![]() the point i was trying to make was that a confident kid will generally speaking be less disruptive in class and will feel less inclined to to become"tribal" to escape bullying........but yes safety of course must come first. |

hasbeen...You made a very valid point...my reply was just a gentle poke...don't take it as a rebuke, please. It is just that I finished reading a sports injury text yesterday that provided all kinds of argument that whilst headgear prevents some of the KOs, it actually doesn't have any impact at all on reducing the progressive damage that leads to the post-concussive syndrome such as Mohammed Ali had. and yes, kicks are far more worrying...All views are valid in the forum, and we almost always do a good job of disagreeing with grace and aplomb.

Adding information about the kid fighters. They are the champions and vice-champions from two different categories (elementary 1 and 3) in just this year's "All-Japan Shinkarate K-4 GP".
