Using yoko geri can put you at risk as it requires you to shift your center of gravity moving your side toward the opponent. Therefore it leaves you more vulnerable then, say, a mae geri or mawashi geri would.
I sometimes use it after missing a joudan mawashi and my opponent moves in to attack while I'm reajusting my stance after the missed high kick. Since I already have my side toward my opponent it then only a matter of sticking out a quick yoko geri which most opponents will rush right into. It doesn't result in a knowdown but it's a nice way to keep the opponent at bay after missing a kick. |

This is one of the most interesting training sessions on the web (IMO) in relevance to the thread see 3:23....I use this, unless I'm competing against you in which case no I don't I suck at it

I think it should be used more. The foot requires conditioning in sparring, and the kick should be practiced more often. It really has to be fast. I do find it can be set up with punches. I learned this by getting winded when sparring with TKD fighters.
With enough flexibility in the back, and lower abdominal strength, yoko geri can be a close range kick, set up with punches to the top chest. OSU |

one of the nicest and most effective (in my opinion) way to use yoko geri in kumite is to use it as a counter strike.
a good example would be when you opponent is sending gedan mawashi a your front leg you partially absorb the kick and you the momentum to bring you knee up and throw your yoko geri. with correct speed and timing you should hit your opponent when he is going forward not expecting what is coming. last time i saw this in a tourney the result was major theeth mark on the foot ![]()
