Yoko Geri in Kumite
Osu!
While evaluating some light Kumite this weekend, I found that not once did I even try Yoko Geri. Past experience with poor position and less than ideal power have led me to stop using the kick entirely. After a fairly lengthy search in the Forum for the use of Yoko Geri in Kumite, I think that a separate thread is in order. What entries or strategies have you found to best work to land the Yoko Geri? (Preferably not on his/ her elbow. ) Or have you also chosen not to use it?Osu!

I've eaten quite a few yoko geri from much taller people when trying to come in on them. I myself don't use the kick very much primarily due to my height and fighting style. In and out.

Have used it but not as extensively as the stable, seem to use it more when I'm tired but not sure if this is because the other guy is also tired and more open. Don't see it used a whole lot to be fair.

Strangely although I never used to use it I have started to in the last year. I didnt use it as I was never effective with it but since I started again it seems to work better.

Dent, have you seen the video that has kyokushin kid and shorinken kid fighting? Some Chinense styles have very strong yokogeri in fight.

Yes, Kyokushin4life, I have seen it, and even competed in Sanshou events. With the punches to the head, the side kick can be very effective, as the reach factor is more significant. Part of the difficulty that I find is twofold. First, the distancing for a powerful kick makes it too obvious for my liking. Second, with the arms held lower and tighter to the body, the blade edge of my foot takes more damage than it's worth. Bloke, how are you using it now? Osu!

Not like I'm a kumite expert or anything, but...
I use chuudan yokogeri all the time, and in my experience it works pretty well! I think a lot of people just don't expect it, which is why it connects. I just kinda turn my body to the side and kick.
Or I may start with a low gedan mawashi to the inner thigh and immediately after, do a chuudan yokogeri with the same leg. It works for me! ![]() |

I have been using it more as a thrust as they come in - I suspect that the reason I am getting away with it is that it is rarely used here so no one knows how to deal with it yet.

....his foot stayed just above mine until it got just under waist height and he sort of twisted and hit me square in the stomach....i was for a split second feeling all smug getting him off balance for the big one...then bang! it was as much the surprise as much as anything else that knocked me over....i didn`t think it was possible for a heavyweight all things being equal to get knocked with a yoko geri!![]() |

My use of yokogeri in kumite has but one purpose and its to knock my opponent out of the ring. I often during a fight do a kakato kick to the head of my opponent (in this particular case it is done with the back right leg (ouchi keage). This while sometimes effective it is also a build up for my yokogeri. Suddenly instead of letting the leg sweep up i go over to do a yoko geri, if you have done the kakato 2-3 times before, the opponent will (hopefully) raise his guard as you raise your knee forward think that you are going for the kakato kick again, wham yokogeri straight to the solar plexus. I havent winded anyone out with it yet but I sure have kicked people off the mat with it. I often use this as the opponent is close to the end of the mat, this to push him out with a strong yoko geri.. OSU and good luck with the yoko geri!

Surprisingly, one of my fav. things to do in a Kumite is a Yoko Geri. But i would really only used this kind of kicks in a place where i won't be taken to the ground, because Yoko Geri is very easy to capture. With that said, I mainly use my yoko geri to keep distance, almost like a push kick. Sometimes i add more power and do a more strike technique. My yoko geri looks more like the Sanda's than the traditional Karate, meaning it sweeps up from the floor almost with a straight leg, instead of one pulling back cocking the leg then shooting it straight out. The timing i use my yoko geri is when i usually miss a kick. Like a mae geri or Mawashi...then instead of putting my foot down to the floor, i fake them out and yoko. Doesn't do that much damage, but keeps them from coming in and slamming you. OSU!
