Its like mr Miyagi says: You can not learn karate by book.

Of course you can get theory and some technics from books and video but the fastest and best way is to get a sensei. Try to find a good and opened guy or girl who can teach you and be your mentor.

You will never regret it.

It just struck me yesterday, as I was practicing the tonfa, that I've pretty much learned many of my kata by myself. But this would be impossible, if I hadn't any previous experience and probably had seen the kata before, plus once I know all the combinations, sempai will start correcting - and there is always a lot that needs correcting.

Osu Nix,

Its exactly as you say...
The students train for them selves and get corrected in the dojo by the sensei, the sensei train nationally and get their errors ironned out there by the shihans, the shihans train internationally and get their errors ironed out there by the kancho... that way organisations stay all on the same page....

Self-teaching is impossible in almost anything, whether it is related to MA or not. I've kind of self-taught TKD and Kyokushin kicks, but it is obvious that my kicks are completely out of shape. And, I tried to learn several languages by myself, but I realized I needed some native speakers to test my knowledge. I wonder how those distant-programs of MA using DVDs work. I wouldn't try them.
But, it's good idea to condition your body while absent from MA training.
