Can I apply Kyokushin concepts to my training?
There are no Kyokushin Dojos close to me so I currently train in Tang Soo Do. Is there anything I can apply to my training to help me if I ever get the chance to transition to Kyokushin?

Osu!
sparring bare knuckle under knockdown rules is a start. To work on hands, work on boxing techniques as well. But mainly, I think, spar using knockdown rules. ie, punches and elbows to the body only, kicks and knees to entire body except groin and front of knee. Sweeps and throws ok. Also, no one punch, one point thing. fights are in rounds, so keep fighting for designated rounds. Osu! this is a good start, I think. |

Dear JoeW,
I do not know the sparring/fighting system of Tang Soo Do, but if you want to take up knockdown sparring as part of your training, make sure you and your partner are well-conditioned and with safety gear, and better be watched under someone who understands knockdown. Things can go very wrong in unsupervised knockdown sparring among beginners. OSU!

When you spar knockdown do you go full force just like it is a tourney? Also what do you wear for protection? cup, mouth guard, shin guard?

Dear JoeW,
In training I do not think we should go full force, especially for beginners. About protective gear some people wear shin guards and bag gloves in training, but it will not hurt if you put on more. But after all if you are without supervision and try to "experiment" by yourselves, you can your friends can get very seriously injuried even if you are wearing some knight armor. And may I ask how long have you been training in Tang Soo Do or other martial arts? OSU!

If you are going to spar Knockdown get yourself a copy of the rules so you can be sure that the techniques are legal. And Id agree with Kaka san - have some supervise who has either fought or refereed Knockdown.

Osu!
Padding up every pointy bit (Knees and elbows) is also a good idea. You may feel like a marshmallow, but there's only the two of you. If one gets hurt... Osu!

First off if wish to use Kyokushin concepts to your training it is NOT just single minded K/D fighting.
In fact that is that what Kyokushin was born to it came latter in its history. Training hard and true is far more true to Kyokushin concepts than K/D. K/D just made Kyokushin main stream back then. Kihons in the hundreds and strong imperiled performance in Kata, and technique is truer to Kyokushin. TSD is a softer theory than the diligent focus of Kyokushin of perfection of technique no matter it be Kihon, Kata, or Kumite. If you think that K/D will make you Kyokushin then your mistaken and need to understand that you need guidance from an experienced instructor to go down that road. |

Spirit - you are of course right - I saw mention of Knockdown and allowed myself to veer down that road.

Please Bloke, you are one who needs not to say sorry. You always try to speak in a balanced tone when voicing your Kyokushin experience with the forum.

Thanks Spirit - as I said I just saw Knockdown and started thinking along those lines and like you I struggle to promote the idea that Kyokushin does not equal Knockdown only.

Osu!
I think that for most of us, we are already doing the other training, so we forget that others may not have that opportunity. I think JoeW is honestly looking to train Kyokushin, but is struggling with finding a Dojo. Many of us can sympathize, as we too are without an established Dojo. JoeW, if you can, consider taking regular training trips to the nearest Kyokushin Dojo. Friday, Saturday, Sunday sort of thing. Short, intensive bursts won't replicate having regular Dojo access, but it is a good step along the path. Osu!
