Until Joining this site I was not aware there were different organisations within Kyokushin. However I do remember many years ago having to fill in a form which was sent to Japan and several months later a card arriving in the mail identifying me as a member of IKO?

However I beleive now that my dojo has changed and follows the same organisation that Shihan Jim Phillips is a part of in Sydney Australia...

If someone could let me know what that is I'll cast my vote

Osu!

Osu!

Jim Phillips website says International Karate Organisation South Pacific www.powerkarate.net

Does this mean its a South Pacific branch of IKO (Oyama family)?

Typically a dojo will be a part of a larger organization, or they will be considered independant.

And the logo/kanku on the bottom left of that poster...? made me scratch my head for a second when thinking about the possible organization association (in all seriousness)

this is a paste from the detail behind the entry screen, confirming that this is an independent dojo.
Jim was affiliated with Kancho Matsui, representing him in Australia in his capacity of Branch Chief and Australian Vice-Chairman of the IKO(1), until late 2000, when he decided to join the growing independent movement, and left the IKO(1). He formed the South Pacific federation with the also newly independent New Zealand group led by Shihan Kevin Pepperell and also with Sensei George Kolovos in Melbourne. They have since held a couple of successful tournaments already. He has also since been awarded his 6th dan by this organisation.

I have known all three of the men mentioned here. They were and remain icons of Kyokushinkai in Australia & NZ, regardless of current affiliations or not.

(Although, I must say, that when I was a 1st Kyu, Jim literally took my breath away when he confidently announced that the reason that women should not do full-contact was because it ruined their looks for kata!!!!). needless to say we didn't see eye to eye on that one!!!! Ironically, Jim's wife was a very strong karateka in her own right.

I think it has as much to do with the fact that I was running a relentless lobbying campaign to introduce full-contact for women in Australia. I don't think there was a ranking yudansha who escaped an argument with me
