Wow... what a year so far.. and its only going to get bigger..

Last weekend the AKKA (iko matsushima) held its yearly national tournament,

this was my first foray into the open heavyweight division (i usually fight middleweight and was out weighted by an average of 20kg by the other guys in the division) and also my first time on the mat as a shodan.. i went into this year with no expectations and no cares as i had other goals this year (shodan grading back in june) and didnt really give much of a thought to the consequences...

well it turns out i made the final against one of the guys i train with regularly, Robbie Vack, 3 times Australian open heavy weight champiion, he had about 30kg over me and about a foot in height.. i was soundly beaten but lasted the 2mins without any waza ari being scored against me and from past peformances and that effort i have been selected to fight in japan in November at the IKO matsushima world tournament!!!!

big few months of prep work coming up!!!

Osu Sempai Brad

Firstly congratulations for your recent success with your Shodan grading, competing in the AKKA Nationals and selection in the world championship squad.

We have a student in Hobart who fought against you in the Nationals a few years ago and claims you as a good friend - initials M.R. - know who I'm referring to?

I think I can understand what you're experiencing with the recent Geelong political situation. Personally I have the utmost respect for the Shihan that Sensei Narelle is training with, a very sad situation i.m.o. I just try to focus on training in Sosai's karate and not let this stuff distract me.

BTW - I've been reading this forum for a while but this is my first post.

Osu GeoffR

yeah i am good mates with Matty,

its strange when the first time you ever meet is when you are trying to beat each other to death out on the mat and from that you gain a bond and friendship for years to come.

Thanks for your congratulations, if someone had told me when i first started training that i would get my shodan AND be selected for the Australian team in the one year i would have called them crazy!

as for the political situation, i try my best to take the same attitude as yourself, but it is somewhat difficult at times to ignore.. like having a tornado in your living room

OSU
