Sosai and MMA
I've always wondered how Sosai would've reacted to the rise of MMA through PRIDE, UFC, Shooto, etc. Pancrase and UFC began in 1993, but Sosai sadly passed away in 1994. Now imagine Sosai continuing to live up to this day. Would Sosai simply brush off MMA as nothing more than brawls, or would he have taken note of it? Sosai did indeed incorporate judo and aikijutsu to Kyokushin, and he was not above improving his art.

I don't know. The last years of his life were very questionable, IMO. The same Mas Oyama from earlier in his life, may have not exactly been the same Mas Oyama who passed away in 1994. He was above improving his own art. I don't know why? That's a big reason why a lot of the big-time Black Belts of Kyokushin went on and formed their own splinter group that actually incorporates judo, submission wrestling and punching to the head and others who still do Kyokushin but call it there own art probably due to political BS.

I really think that Daido Juku Kudo is the logical evolution of Kyokushin and it was supported by Oyama. I am not sure if you know this but actually Oyama was the person to make Azuma Takashi resesearch for a set of rules that would maximally simulate a real fight so when Azuma came up with a certain pack of ideas Oyama said that it was great but he could'nt change the rules because they were already quite popular. Azuma is the only person tha was actually pushed by Oyama to form a new organisation and he had Oyama's blessing...so now it is called Daido Juku Kudo

I agree, ibuki. Daido Juku as well as Shidokan are two of Kyokushin's best derivatives that address striking and grappling equally. Both styles have great competition formats that adhere to the functionality of all round fighting.

According to Bout Review, Akira Maeda received permission from Mas Oyama for Bitsadzse tariel to enter RINGS, so I think he would have been pro MMA.

However, BoutReview does kayfabe MMA occurences in Japan.

Suppposedly, Sosai met a certain Taijiquan instructor named Mr. Ching. His interview on the bottom of this page describes what happened:
http://www.kyokushin.ca/kyokushin/spirit.html
Basically, direct linear attacks didn't work against circular moves and counters. Sosai didn't lose, but he couldn't hit Mr. Ching from what his interview stated. Now, I wonder if this Mr. Ching was from the Chen style of Taijiquan. Despite what most people think, Taijiquan is actually a formidable martial art, but too many have focused on the health aspects. Chen style adhers to its concept as a martial art. Besides Kenichi Sawaii, Sosai probably picked up something from this Mr. Ching, and later adapted to Kyokushin.
Another point. I recently saw a copy of This is Karate by Sosai. I was very surprised to see ground techniques in it, so Sosai was very well aware of the importance of ground-fighting.

We are being introduced to submission techniques in my dojo: wrist locks, submission take downs, and arm bars. It is really great stuff and very complementary to the traditional striking/blocking methods.

I also have this book and yes you are right. Sosai did have some ground techniques incorporated in his book and thus was willing to incorporate this aspect of the "fight." I would like to see the progression of Kyokushin continue down this path of incorporating more of what is necessary for us all to be well rounded. Perhaps not to the extent of Daido Juku (i.e. punches to the face/headbutts/groin kicks), but down the same path.

I know this is a bit OT, but who are some Chen Taiji, Taikiken, and Yiquan teachers who are more on the functional martial side of teaching their styles (i.e. with live sparring)?

Yes, i have that book. He dedicate a section for ground grappling techniques... This book is from the early 70's so that proves his was already working on this aspect long before MMA became popular.
