Actually I think that he studied Kyokushin when he was 7, until the death of his Sensei. In 1993, after seeing Royce Gracie in UFC 1, he started learning BJJ. He dropped Kyokushin at 12 (in 1993). Anyways he still wears a Kyokushin headband in his website.

When he defeated Matt Hughes, GSP lovers in Montreal went crazy... Thanks to him and David Loiseau, Montreal is known internationaly in the MMA world. There will also be a UFC event in Montreal, for the first time.

he is part kyokushin by heart ...if not he would not wear the kanku ... to say that he is good only because of kyokushin would be not true...

GSP is a multi-dimension fighter, and he is topnotch in whatever he does, which I think made him a champion. It's kinda cool that he shows a few Kyokushin techniques in his new dvd.

Apparently, in UFC 83 (his last fight when this is posted) he wore a Shidokan karate DoGi jacket while walking to the cage.
Maybe he has rejoined the "family" through them? time will tell.

GSP is actually a nidan in Kyokushin. He started in Kyokushin and I think his heart will always be there. He took up the other styles after his Sensei died. He is an excellent, well rounded fighter. Although the ground fighting is very popular these days and does have some cool moves, I'd have to say that in a street fight or a situation where you'd have to defend yourself, Kyokushin would beat all the styles. It's a power style and as my teacher says about ground fighting, the fight shouldn't get to the ground in the first place if you know how to defend against it. I think the ground fighting is great for the MMA entertainment aspect, but standing toe-to-toe, Kyokushin is by far the most powerful and practical.

Osu!

IMO, making assumptions in fighting isn't the healthiest option. In real confrontations, the individual and not the style is what will determine the outcome.

I have to agree.

Its really the user that makes the most of it. I do believe as a striking art that Kyokushin and its offspring offer some of the best training.

like dent said, it's the fighter not the style. having competed in almost all full contact styles of combat (knock down, tkd, kickboxing, muay thai, boxing, judo, shidokan triathlon rules), i can say that i've met some tough cookies who could hold there own even outside of their individual style. to say that one style is better than another is absolutely wrong. it is what's inside a person that makes them a fighter, not the style. styles are chosen to express one's personality. the punch or the kick that knocks someone out is the best and no one style has a patent on the punch and kick (or anything else).

Hi,

I am curious as to his Nidan. I was under the impression that he stopped training in Kyokushin when he was a teenager. I don't know any IKO that grants Nidan to teenagers do they?

Osu,

I totally agree with what you are saying about it being what's inside the person and not the style that make someone a good fighter - different styles fit different personalities, and I've learned never to underestimate anyone, no matter their size or style. I just feel that certain styles like Kyokushin, as far as stand-up goes, offers training that is geared towards "real life" situations and not just tournament style fighting. I believe that all the martial arts are intertwined in some way or another. Just because someone takes a certain style doesn't mean they are a better fighter than someone else...like you said...it's what's inside the person and how they use their skills.
