Daidojuku members
Hi
I dont know if this is the right place to introduce myself, but anyway..

I've been living in Japan for about 12 years. Practising MA off and on for about 15 years.

I train at the Daidojuku Kichijoji branch(Tokyo) under sensei Kenichi Iimura.
Recently passed my Shodan test.

I stumbled across this site by chance and found that there are some other Kudo practitioners out there, so I'm pretty stoked.

Looking forward to openning some doors of communication with others who are practising Kudo abroad.

Osu.

Hello and welcome.
We usually introduce ourself in the "Open Discussion" forum, but its not a hard rule and doing it here is just fine.

Yes, there are a few daido practitioners here (but I will let them step forward on their own) and we hope to get more. We also have a few zendokai guys (a daido juku offshot) and a lot of people interested in kudo.
This forum started out as a kyokushin forum, but quickly grew into a forum for all kyokushin-descendants and other knockdown karate styles, to discuss, share knowledge and news, without any political rivalry. We are actually quite proud of Daidojuku as representative in MMA for our little family.
Looking forward to read your post in the future.

OSU! Martin H. This is just an observation. I think it is great how you keep this forum positive and politically free. The way you welcomed that Daidojuku guy and even complicated his style by pointing out their presence in MMA was fantastic. I am proud of you and the way you're running things. I feel fortunate to be a part of things and see it as a priviledge not taken for granted. I hope other members of this forum share my sentiments. I hope this forum continues to grow and expand and is so vital to the Kyokushin(and off shoot styles) community. I have nothing but respect and admiration for you and just wanted to express that here. Keep up the good work. OSU!

OSU Kudoist!!
I am a Kudoist too, being from Bulgaria. I have been practicing Kyokushin since about 5 years and Kudo since about a year. I have a 3rd Kyu in Kyokushin and 4th in Kudo since the fact that till 4th Kyu the techniques in Kudo are mainly Kyokushin + punches in teh head, typica for Kudo. I have passed my 4th Kyu exam this summer under Azuma Jukucho.
@Kudoist if you want you may write here or make personal contact with me through the pm system here or via my email: mkalchev@gmail.com
It will be an honour for me! OSU!

OSU kaka-san!
I said it not to boast myself, but because that except the fact that I have trained seriously Kyokushin since 5 years and have some competition successes, there is no reason to get such a high Kyu in so complex and serious system such as Kudo. I just want some contact with Kudoist, who is my sempai and he is a blackbelt holder and I wanted him to take me seriously.
I don't consider boasting to be part of BUDO. I don't want to boast and I feel very bad about your statement that I have quoted. There is a saying here in Bulgaria that goes "A dog that barks doesn't bite". I prefer concentrating on training and communicating with people like You that know what they are talking about.
@Kudoist: OSU I am sorry for such a big offtopic. Hope that this doesn't ruin our future communication!
OSU!

Dear ibuki,
Please don't misunderstand me. My statement is by all means envious but not sarcastic. I do believe that you received your grade personally from Jukucho and it really is an honor to be directly accessed by the founder of a style which has produced so many strong fighters (and I don't think Jukucho will allow anyone to get a Kudo grade without some real serious pain, without proving to him that he or she has what it takes to deserve to wear the "Kudo" kanji). I always believe in you because the knowledge shown in your words and your passion in karate speak for themselves.

OSU!

Yes that was me at the Hokutoki. When I got there I found out my opponent couldnt make it and I was told that I would be fighting you. So please excuse me for not saying hello then.
Then on the day of the tournament I was told I would be facing the Kansai champion instead. I was Too nervous and fought like an idiot.
But my sempai beat my opponent in the finals to win the tournament..

I'll be entering the Hokutoki prelims again this year. I've had a few more fights now and I feel well prepared this time.

How often do you come to Japan?

I also had some Muay Thai training before I started Daidojuku, so I was attracted to Iimura senseis style.
We get alot of top ranking kickboxers comming in on occasion to train with us, which is great because I get to spar with them.
One of my sempai fights as a pro kickboxer. I also fight in amature kickboxing to get more experience.
Sometimes it seems like we're more a muay Thai gym than a Kudo dojo!

I can vouch for that. The shodan grading was just brutal. Of 7 guys who tested I was the only 1 who passed. And I was veeery lucky. Because of my age I only had to fight 8 opponents. If I had had to fight 10 like the younger guys I dont think I would have made it either.
There were a few bruised and battered brown belts in tears that night.

But going through that test has changed me somehow. There is a pressure to live up to the standard of a Daidojuku shodan that burns a fire inside me and makes me train even harder than before.

Ibuki san. I am so impressed by your attitude. Its refreshing to meet other people who take their Budo seriously.
Lately I have been so disapointed with the comments made by martial artists on other forums, who seem to think MA is just about street survival,or sport, and have no understanding of "do".

Osu, i'm very happy to speak with you.
last year, that's my first hokutoki, I was very nervous too i have see your fight in Tokyo selection, you have very good kick and great fighting spirit...
we would have to face us normally, but at the last time they changed our adversaries... after the fight the friendship comes, this is my spirit.
Normaly i come in june for belt test and training at hombu dojo and with Kato sensei.
for me it's honnor if i can training one time in your dojo, because Iimura sensei is great teacher and they are a lot of strong fighter in your dojo...

PS : congratulation for your black belt, it's very hard test, I also hope for me to make a success of the test of the 10 fights.

OSU Kudoist-san!
I am sorry for merging your posts and deleting them. Now I gathered all the infroamtion into one post since this is my duty as a moderator in this forum.
Now as a fellow Kudoist I would like to say that I am honoured to communicate with you. the attitude that I have towards BUDO is something that the I sensed while meeting several Budokas...true Budokas who are Japanese. Communication and learning from them as well as my approach to Martial Arts in common formed this way of perceiving KUDO.
I am very happy to be able to impress You. That is a sign that I am on the right path.."DO".
I would be very delighted if You send me a personal message with Your email address so I can add it in my list.
OSU!

Thankyou!
You train with Kato sensei? Hes a good friend of my teacher.
I would love to do some training with Kato sensei myself. He is one tough guy!

I just tried to PM you the details about my dojo but I dont have enough posts to enable PM yet.

Our dojo is about 20 min walk from JR kichijoji station on the chuo line. Which is about 20 mins from Shinjuku station.
I think the cost is about 8000 yen per month but I'll have to double check on that.
Iimura sensei is a bit funny about having Daidojuku members from other dojos come to train with us, because his methods are very different from regular dojos. He usually gives degeiko students a real hard time.
But if you prove that you can hang in there and keep comming back then he'll soften up.
I can put in a good word for you too.

Are you planning to take your Shodan test this year?
Maybe I can give you some advice based on my own experience of it.

Well it sounds like you're doing alot of training.
So do you go to a gym that teaches both Muay Thai and BJJ? Some days you must be doing both MT and BJJ classes.
I've recently started supplimenting my regular training with BJJ classes at a local dojo too, because Kichijoji dojo doesnt really practice any BJJ.

I'll start a new thread about the Shodan grading to share my thoughts on it.

Are you asking how long it takes me to get to the dojo?
About 1hrs drive in busy traffic, or 40 mins when its not busy.
Our dojo is very much like a Muay Thai gym.
We do warm up then shadow, thai pads/heavy bag, technique/defence drills with partners, Sparring, then finish up with either clinching/knees or some ground work.
After class we do whatever we want to work on. Such as heavy bag work or strength/conditioning training.
We dont do the idou keiko(basic combinations)or kihon that is typical of Daido Juku dojos. I did this for the first time at my shodan grading! What a nightmare. Luckily my back ground in kyokushin saved me from feeling totally lost.
Iimura sensei feels the typical Daido Juku kihon are not particularly usefull for teaching good technique. His technique is superb, so I'm not going to argue. But because of this we have a reputation as being a bit of a rebelious dojo.
We dont spar Kyokushin rules.
We dont practise Judo throws, but we do practise how to counter them.<
