Thanks.
I was very lucky this year, there weren't so many competitors so I only had to fight 3 times to win.
I started out really badly too.
Nerves I guess. I just couldnt fight the way I usually do at all.
I somehow managed to win the judges decision in my first fight against Fujimatsu (younger brother). But I didnt feel I won it. I was expecting an encho, so I was surprised when they gave me the win.

I lost a kouka in my second fight but managed to get an encho, and then scored a kouka myself, thereby gaining the win.

It wasn't till the finals that I started to loosen up a bit and find my rhythm,
scoring an ippon knockdown with a spinning back fist.

I've got a lot of work to do to prepare for the Hokutoki.
My opponents will be much stronger there.

This tournament really made me aware of what I need to work on though,
so hopefully by June 1st I'll be in good condition to put on some good fights.

Well this years Hokutoki was a very disapointing result for me.
I really trained hard to prepare.

I suffered a shoulder injury that prevented me from doing much punching during the weeks leading up to the fight, and I couldn't do much grappling either, so I focused on really fine tuning my knees and kicks to counter punching attacks.

By the last week of prep, my shoulder was getting better and I was in really good condition. Then disaster struck 3 days before the tournament, when I badly pulled a muscle in my inner thigh.
I was just shattered! I couldn't even walk without pain the next day and thought I was going to have to pull out. After all that hard work!!!
But I decided to go anyway.

On the way my sensei and senpai gave me a lot of support and encouragement.
I managed to overcome my self pity and get into a positive state of mind.
Most of my senpai have competed with pretty serious injuries at some stage in their careers.
Sensei told me to see it as a chance to test my heart under adverse conditions. If I could compete with a strong will in my present state, then it would make me a much stronger fighter.

By tournament day I could walk OK, but any strain on my left leg caused a stabbing pain right up my inner thigh and groin.

I did my best to cover my condition in the warm up room, where the other fighters could see me. I didnt want anybody knowing about my weakness.
I threw some light kicks and the pain was tollerable, so I did some light contact sparring, but had to stop before even 1 round as the pain got a lot worse.
So I knew I'd have to just try and focus on punching.

Once the fight started though I just couldn't help myself.
After 3 weeks of training kicking and kneeing, my body just reacted how I had trained it.
I think it hurt me more when I kicked my opponent, but I just tried to maintain my composure and keep the pressure on.
I was dominating him, and was confident of winning, but when he caught my leg I just couldnt hold my ballance and went down easily.

He was just waay to good for me on the ground. I managed to stop him from getting an achillies hold only to get caught in a triangle choke. As I was squashing that he quickly switched and caught me in an arm bar and I had no choice but to tap out.
Man I hate tapping out to someone I know I can beat in stand up! Its soooo exasperating!
So that was the end of this years Hokutoki for me.

A dissapointing result, but a great learning experience. I thought my basic grappling skills would be good enough to keep me out of danger for the 30 second ground fighting time limit. I was wrong.
I have to work a lot more on my grappling to compete at Hokutoki level.

My Sensei was right. This experience did make me stronger.
Every time I fight I get more and more relaxed and confident.
I cant wait to compete again when I'm in good condition.

And there is rumour that there may be another weight division Hokutoki in November, instead of the open weight. So I may get another chance later this year!

Dear Kudoist,
Good fight and I wish to see you fight in the All-Japan this year.

Are you still fighting if it is open-weight as usual?

This is a great match report, Kudoist. I know competing with injuries is a burden, but you have come through it knowing more about yourself.

Well done for going!

Yes I'll probably still fight anyway.
To be honest I'm not all that interested in the open weight division.
The allowance of groin kicks isn't something I agree with.
But I want to get as much competition experience as possible before the world champs next year.
And there are some really good fighters in the other weight divisions that I would like the opportunity to fight.
I'm sure it would be a really valuable learning experience.

Osu! Kudoist,

Is there information on the rules available somewhere? A full breakdown of what scores etc? (It's fun to watch, but I'm sure that knowledge of the rules would make it more rewarding.)

Dear Dent,
No, it is for the best winner.

I have no idea about the weight tournament, but if I am correct, the winner of the open weight tournament can keep the flag (not spear) for one year. And the flag is called "Hokutoki". Perhaps Kudoist can give more information on this.

Here is a link to a very breif summary of the rules:

Daido Juku - English

Click on "what is the Hokutoki"

I have a more detailed version scanned into my computer, but I have no idea on how to get it uploaded on here.

The hokutoki flag goes to the fighter who scores the highest total of points in the tournament. So its like an MVP.

This year won again by Kononenko senpai. I think he has won the light heavy weight division 6 times now. AND the open weight tournament too.
He is one very scary fighter.
Knowing that I'm going to have to beat him to win my division sure is a big insentive to train harder!

OSU.
