I competed in the Kanto region tournament today.
In the light heavyweight division, Yamauchi Shinya, a 4th dan in Nihon Kempo placed first and I placed third. Not sure on the name of the second place winner. The 2 other fighters from my dojo both placed second in their divisions. We all lost by submission ippon I won my first fight by submision ippon(arm bar) and my second by points.(waza ari, knee to the head). Lost my third by tapping out to a leg lock. My 3rd opponents striking skills were poor and I was confident, but I knew he was good at leg locks. Then like an idiot I let him take me to the ground and he had me before I even realised what was happenning.Aaaah! There were alot of tap outs by submission today. Jukucho mentioned in his closing speech that there needs to be more recognition of good strikes by the judges. Daidojuku is supposed to be a striking based art, but these days more and more fighters are turning to submission skills. Its no wonder when you can land a solid punch that rocks your opponent, and obviously would've caused alot of damage without the mask, and yet not get awarded any points for it. Going for the tap out is easier. I hope we see more recognition of strikes in the future. That being said I know I also have to work more on my grappling skills. Having good striking skills but a total lack of ability on the ground is a waste. Oh well, I'm stoked to be able to compete in the hokutoki again this year. Later in the month I'm off to Thailand for some intense training. Osu. |

Dear Kudoist,
Congratulations! A Hokutoki participant on this board! So are you now thinking about how to deal with Sensei Sasazawa or Sensei Hatsutori ?By the way I saw the winners of last year's All-Kanto weight were dressed in white while the winners of All-Japan weight were all in blue (at the award presentation ceremonies). I just wonder if this is a colour code of celebration in Kudo? OSU!

On 4/1, in the Sports Center at Chuoku in Tokyo, the regional elimination of “2007 Hokutoki All-Japan Weight Tournament” for the Kanto Region was held.
In this tournament something of a historical significance happened. Hisamatsu Yuji from Waiyutsu Keisyukai was one of the competitors. Waiyutsu Keisyukai was founded by Nishi Yoshinori, who became independent form Daido Juku many years ago. Until now, there has been no official exchange between Waiyutsu Keisyukai and Daido Juku. Hisamatsu passed the first round with ippon victory. However, he had a tough fight with the top man of Daido Juku, Fujimatsu, in round two and he lost by hantei. This is a fight in which Kudo was directly pitted against MMA. At the same time, Yamauchi Shinya from Nihon Kempo and Misonou Tsutomu from Kujuken Kaiken took the first and second place in the light heavyweight by storm. Lightweight 1 Takahashi (Niigata) 2 Suehiro Tomoaki (Kichijouji) 3 Miyadzi Mou (Hachiouji) 4 Kurokawa Tetsuji (Yokohama North) 5 Matsuyama Naoya (Yukinori) 6 Ito Norio (Narita) Middleweight 1 Hori Munetada (Narita) 2 Iijima Susumu (Urawa) 3 Sumazaki Makoto (Toho University Kakutogi Department) 4 Ogawa Yoshihisa (Kujuken Kaiken) Light Heavyweight 1 Yamauchi Shinya (Nihon Kempo) 2 Misonou Tsutomu (Waiyutsu Keisyukai) 3 Jason Angove (Kichijouji) Heavyweight 1 Fujimatsu Yasutori (Sohonbu) 2 Shida Atsushi (Kichijouji) Super Heavyweight 1 Ineda Takuya (Yokohama North) 2 Hasegawa Masato (Niigata) OSU!

I learnt alot in this Kanto tournament. Its given me more to think about and develop. Theres nothing like a tough competition to stimulate you to grow beyond your present boundaries. I'm actually really excited about facing the top fighters in our organisation. I see it as a great opportunity to push my limits and learn from the experience. Regarding the Gi colors, in last years Kanto tournament the blue gi's werent used. But they were used in the Hokutoki. By chance it just happenend that all the winners were in blue gis in their last match. My wife pointed it out to me at the time. I hope I'm in blue this year! Oh, and thanks for showing the care to list me as "Kudoist" in the results post. Its OK though, I dont mind my real name being used. Nothing to hide. I think. Do you mind me asking where do you get your info from? Were you at the tournament? OSU. |

Dear Kudoist,
I get the info from the website of Daido Juku Honbu and www.gbring.com and I was not at the tournament. Thanks for pointing out about the color code. I thought to myself that "white" in Daido Juku means "regional victory" while "blue" means "national victory" in official ceremonies. Why are you going to Thailand for specialised training in takedown and grappling? I guess people are in Thailand for mostly striking training? Ok I put your name back to the results. Please tell me if the spelling is correct. OSU!

Take some time off from my regular hectic work schedule, and just focus on training for a couple of weeks. Its good hard training twice a day, and it will get me in really good shape before the Hokutoki. For a few extra baht I can get private lessons with a Thai trainer to really sharpen up my skills. Striking is still first and foremost in my style of fighting. But I will be taking BJJ lessons when i'm here in Japan, and working on takedown defence more in my regular sparring in the dojo. Not much time till the Hokutoki so I cant see me making any massive improvement in the grappling dept. But whatever extra practice I can get will help. |
