Systema or the system is an militairy martial art developed
for Russian special forces (Spetsnaz) and Russian Police .
The word is that it is a very practical and effective art and
similar to Krav Maga ( from the Israelian special forces )
see the links for more info .

Their link to spetsnaz and russian police is to be taken with a grain of salt, (most in those organizations did the military version of sambo, and either way -unarmed combat is not something focused on seriously in any modern armed forces) and there are a few "no-touch" KO artist (=BS artists) among them, but generally, it is considered a realistic style for self defense purposes.

I think that most of the problems in systema comes from way too rapid growth, with many substandard instructors and clowns using the name as a result.
So if you are going to train it, be sure you find a good school.

Hello every one
well related to systema it somehow ressembels aikido in focusing at denfence and counter attacks on the other hand its ground fighting resssembels sambo and its leg locks it also has an effective uninque punching kinetic known as systema punch it also applies pressure points . being a military art it teaches how to deal with knife attacks and it defence against knife attacks is highly effective , sytema training it rather uses drills and sparring instead of set kata. It focuses mainly on controlling the six body levers (elbows, neck, knees, waist, ankles, and shoulders) through pressure point application, striking and weapon applications. Systema is often advertised as being a martial art employed by some Russian Spetsnaz units.thre are two types of systema there is Kadochnikov's Systema wich also studies striking kinetics plus biomechanics and ryabko,s systema but it does not study striking kinetics .its training is extremly healthy. finally the most important feature of systema is its realistic defense system and if some one can mix it with kyokushin offence instead of its unpracticle defence you would have a lethal combination

I echo Martin H's sentiments regarding being careful of which school of Systema you ascribe to -- there are a number of charlatans that are either self-evident or have been exposed as such in recent years.

My own personal opinion is that combat sambo would be a better choice for a military art than Systema.

My best friend is a deputy US Marshal. He has trained/ taken some courses in Systema and really loves it.

There is some Systema that is good and some other Systema that makes me raise my eyebrow. Some of the bs systema is even "legit" in it's lineage which makes me wonder even more. I don't know what else to say about it except for martin and haru said, be careful.

(This post applies to all artisan types of training, and possibly to all learning. And is just a personal opinion.)

All lineage has to be carefully examined, and sometimes questioned.

IMO, skills cannot be passed down, they can only be earned. Having a qualified instructor in no way guarantees a successful student. If a student is going to teach, then they have to stand on their own merits, rather than purely laying claim to the skills of those who went before them.

True but someone that trains under a legit instructor and earns some type of instructor rank from that instructor should be legit...should be, is key. Arts get dilluted somehow, some way, in every martial art I know of at some point, just give it time.
However, you're right but was just adding more food more thought.

Painfully correct, PowerofOne. I think that is why I feel that some method of outside pressure testing should be incorporated. Hence my support of H's view that every Dojo should enter open competition.
