Lyoto Machida is son of Yoshizo Machida, the guy who brought Karate Shotokan (JKA style) for Pará, Brazil. His record in MMA is 9-0-0. His Striking techniques are one of finnest in MMA today.

He's also a BJJ expert. I saw some of his fights and i have to disagree when you say he has some of finnest striking techniques in MMA. But he's tough allright.

I heavily disagree with him being the finest striker in MMA today; the reason why is because I see guys like Anderson Silva, Mirko, Wanderlei that have a better striking game. I wouldn't consider him a bjj expert yet, but would consider him on his way of getting better(I think he's a purple belt). He has also competed in Sumo, believe it or not. He has defeated Rich Franklin and BJ Penn, but I'm not surprised about Franklin and I have no idea what BJ Penn was thinking fighting at that weight. I think it's cool that Machida still fights in almost a kiba or shiko dachi stance sometimes, throws some yuko geri, etc. I don't know how smart it is when that kind of stance leavs you open for leg kicks, but if it works for him, good times.
I'll take everything back if he fights someone like Anderson Silva and defeats him but I just don't see it happening. His striking game and his grappling game aren't on the same level. Does anyone know if he's still under team Inoki? I think he left but forgot if he did or not. oh yeah he has also done some JPW, too. So he was a pan am shotokan champion, some sumo, some jpw, trains in bjj, and fights mma..a good guy but not the finest striker in mma.

Yeah, it's kind of funny. He still completely fights as if he's in a Shotokan Karate match. If anything his counter timing is off da heezy but I'd love to see what he could do against someone like Anderson Silva, Quiton Jackson, Chuck Liddell, Dan Henderson, or Wanderlei Silva. I too personally feel he's not up to caliber with these men but who knows with this guy?
powerof0ne, by JPW you mean Japanese Pro Wrestling? If you do, then that is inaccurate. He fought in Inoki's NJPW (Pro-Wrestling) but the event was a mix of MMA/Pro-Wrestling. |

thanks for the correction! That's what I meant, I don't really pay much attention to that "scene"...NJPW, I just know he did have some dealings with Inoki and the only reason why I even knew was because I follow Josh Barnett's career since I used to fight on some of the same cards as Barnett.
I will say that Machida has a win over BJ Penn which can't be ignored but BJ Penn also shouldn't be fighting at that high of a weight, too.

He is a ITKF (international traditional karate federation) Pan-Am kumite champion 2001. ITKF uses basically the same as oldschool WUKO (nowdays WKF) rules.
