What's that style called?
This may be a very silly question. Is there an existing school (I mean style) that teaches Kyokushin style fighting as well as takedowns (shooting etc) & ground fighting? If there is, what do they call it. And if there isn't... any good ideas for what it could/should be called?
We're not thinking of opening a school but are keen to include fights this style in our events and don't know what to call it! ![]() |

They call it the triathlon of martial arts and they do it in Shidokan Tournaments .
Or is this a silly answer ? ; ) I also saw some Jiu Jitsu Tournaments with a similar approach . Start with stand- up fighting than shoot and grapple . Osu

They're are multiple kyokushin off shoots that do this. Shidokan as was previously mentioned but also Daido Juku/Kudo, Jon Bluming's Kyokushin Budo Kai

Yeah not quite Shidokan or Daidojuku because I mean eliminating the headpunching. Maybe it is Kyokushin Budo Kai? I'll have to dig out Shihan Bluming's rules.
So yes Azimuth, it was a silly answer ;-) Last edited by Aunty Ichigeki; 05-17-2007 at 12:43 AM. Reason: To have a crack at Azimuth :-) |

Shidokan Karate have tournaments where no facial punching is allowed but grappling is. They have different rules for different rounds. Round 1 is regular Kyokushin rules + clinching and grappling. Round 2 Kickboxing and Round 3 MMA.

In the Shidokan event i was invited for last weekend they fought like in a regular full contact karate way with that difference that there was a 5 sec rule included . The fighters could bring the opponents to the floor and grapple but only for a max of 5 seconds . This was to my humble opinion a nice way of making it attractive to the public .
Punches to the face NOT allowed . (Check out my pic with shihan Soeno ( son of ...) in the gallery )

Awesome. I like that idea... wouldn't get much achieved on the ground I guess but it would impact the standup a lot. I retract the silly comment.

They showed some amazing fast armlocks and chokes , the things you can do in a 5 sec count .
Each ref made that count in a loud and clear way before they had to break up and get back to fighting position . I was pleasantly surprised ; )

Quote:
Bluming doesnt do that specifically,... his "own" invention is kinda what kyokushinkan is doing now with the big head gear on and face punching + takedowns and locks/strangelations on the floor, but i havent seen it done inside the bluming organisation and i live in his home country... rest off the bluming organisation does kyokushin style fighting like we see in the other organisations (standard kyokushin), maybe a little more splitsecond grabbing action allowed but 99% the same as IKO rules. Shidokan does the three formats in 1 match..... plus you can addapt... Round: 1) Kyokushin 2) Kickboxing 3) MMA or 1) Kyokushin 2) Kickboxing 3) kyokushin (again) There are many possibilities, Osu Ksan
