Question Which MMA style karate do you train in?
Which MMA style karate do you train in?

As we could not have more than 10 options in the other thread, I have made another thread specially for MMA style.

Definitely Shidokan though Daido Juku would be a close second. One round of Knockdown karate, second round of Kickboxing, and the final round with submission grappling, no wonder Shidokan is called the Triathlon of Martial Arts.
Kyokushin? Well, if the Kyokushin karateka can nullify takedowns and not get the fight onto the ground, there's always a striker's chance. But the Kyokushin karateka should have at least some training in grappling to prepare for positioning, transitions, submissions, and ground and pound.

the karateka has to atleast learn to box and train in some wrestling. he would have to develop good takedown defense and learn to fight from the clinch (which is a whole new skillset). in shidokan (whose roots come from kyokushin), many times we have the grappling rounds set for standup striking/on ground grappling only or we just make them mma (striking on the feet and ground). many shidokan fighters are able to fight well in other arenas (knockdown, muay thai, submission wrestling, mma, etc.) because of this. our curriculum (depends on the dojo of course) requires the development of kihon, kata, muay thai, and grappling. for my dojo, my senior students compete in knockdown, thai boxing, boxing, san shou, mma. i even make them wear the supersafe headgear and spar like the kudo fighters (i think it is an extremely awesome sport/art too and it's rule structure resembles what a street fight with clothing would be like).

Yes those are some good points.
I don't realy know why the kyokushin karate-ka would need to learn boxing but I agree that they do need to learn how to graphle.
Mabey ashihara would do good too.

This is a very small observation I made and in no way I'm saying it's law but To me it seems like every time a cage is involved in mma they seem to ground fight more; However every time I see mma without a cage they seem to stand and fight more.
What do you think about this.

Many UFC fans compare notes with PRIDE fans and usually the tactics involved between the cage and ring can be narrowed done to several differing factors.
In a cage, like UFC's Octagon, while fighters are not allowed to hold the fence, many ground-and-pounder fighters along with clinchers like to pin someone against the cage to inflict damage and then eventually take them down to the ground. However, it doesn't mean that fighting in the ring wouldn't have some of that going on as well. Submission artists like the Nogueira brothers have pulled off textbook positioning and submission skills in PRIDE's ring. The problem is though, that people do fall out of the ropes or get entangled in them. Of course rule variations apply as well, but that's about the gist of what's the difference between the two comparative settings.

Interesting. I'm glad to know that but I was not realy thinking of the ring.
If you have ever watched WEC you would know that they use neither.
All they have is a floor. They don't usely get people on the ground so in my openion its better without a cage, a ring, or mabey a giant fish stumuch.
This is because I like the fighting when they stand better.

I have gotton this off topic. So you can put it back whenever you want.

i do train in shidokan shorin ryu. this ain't the shidokan karate you might think of.

it's an traditional style from okinawa. i'm not training fullcontact karate and ground techniques in regular lessons, but i work on it with a friend for ourselves. we just get in the dojo and train there on fullcontact.

si picked "others" for answer!

in general the shorin-ryu karate is linear. they use the traditional noncontact/semicontact-kumite. but our sensei also knows about fullcontact fighting. as a friend of mine and i started to get interested in it, we established a fullcontact group in our dojo.

the mma-karate style "shidokan" is a different organisation. i didn`t find out yet, how these styles are conected.

as soon as i get an answer i will post it here.

so far

for clarity, there are some other styles that have the name shidokan (which translates as "those who live and train in the way of the samurai") connected to the style name. kancho soeno's world karate association the shidokan is a different organization.

Osu from Shin Sen Jutsu
Hello,

I am new to this forum and I just wanted to say hello.

I train/teach a MMA style called Shin Sen Jutsu or SSJ in the UK.

It is a hybrid of Muaythai, Karate, Jujutsu and Shootfighting. I was trained in Yokohama Japan by Akira Maeda, Kanehara, Yamamoto and various other Senseis like Chris Dolman and Thom Hanrink in Holland.

SSJ use to have an office in Japan but now we are UK based.

SSJ's training is very similar to Daido Juku/Kudo so I am hoping to enter some players into Kudo comps in the future.

I had a 6 year Shootfighting career in Japan and now I fight for the Cage rage organization in the UK at the ripe age of 41 lol.

Any one in the UK who wants to hook up, please mail me.

Welcome SSJ - good to have you here and it sounds like you have lots of experience to share.

Why not pop into the introduction section and start a thread telling us a little more about yourself?

Meanwhile can you tell us some more about SSJ? What does the name mean? Are you based in MK or throughout the UK?

SSJ is based in MK, but I have taught and influenced many MMAers through out the UK.

The training I received in Japan was in 1996 to 2001 and was a mix of Kyokushin, Seidokaikan, Muaythai, Jujutsu/Judo. My teacher Sensei Maeda was taught by Mas Oyama, Karl Gotch, Fujiwara etc.

The name Shin Sen Jutsu means 'New Fighting Art'.

I also trained at the SeidoKaiKan in Tokyo for the K1 organization when I fought in 1995 and I was also a standby fighter in 1994.

I have many experiences from training and fighting in Japan with organizations like RINGS, K1, Shootboxing & ZST. I have also shared the ring with fighters like Fedor, Cro-cop, Babalu and Mario 'Zen' Sperry.

Yours in Kakutougi,

Lee
