His Kyokushin Sensei was Jean Couture. I have been unable to find any other information about his Kyokushin training. I did however have the pleasure of meeting GSP at a Kyokushin tournament in Montreal last year (the Mas Oyama Memorial Cup) so I think its safe to assume he still has some ties with Kyokushin.

one thing for sure, not that he is the best, but i feel that he is one of the most well rounded fighters in the UFC. Other competers are mostly big punchers or grapplers. GSP is a puncher, grappler, and goo kicker, not wild looking like alot of the other fighters.

Well, he still wears his affiliation of Kyokushin out of respect for his deceased teacher. Best of luck to St. Pierre. OSU!

For your information: On Saturday, August 25th, St-Pierre gets his chance to show if his out of the Octagon changes will translate into success when the bell rings as he fights for the first time since the loss to Serra against Josh Koscheck. It’s no easy task for your first fight back after a loss, but that’s the way GSP wants it. “Josh Koscheck is a very good fighter,” said St-Pierre. “He’s very hungry right now, he wants to go for the title and he’s on the way up. I know it’s gonna be a very, very tough fight for me, but that’s what I want. I’m just coming from a loss and I don’t want an easy fight to build me up. I’m already up, I just want to get back in as fast as I can. I like the challenge and I like to fight good fighters because I am a fighter and I want to be the best in the world. And to be the best in the world, I have to fight the best fighters in the world.” The 25 august! |

I may actually go to this UFC. I'm not a big proponent of the UFC but I Like GSP and I'll be in Vegas this weekend. Too bad CroCop isn't on this bill as well.

Flawless victory for GSP.
It wasn not a fight, it was total domination.

I just got back from Vegas today. I got decent seats for the event but they sure weren't cheap. I can honestly say that the crowd for a UFC event is much different than a K-1 event.
GSP had a lot of support in the crowd. I saw a lot of Canadian flags and many people were chanting "GSP" during his fight. He primarily worked on the ground for rounds 1 and 2. In round 3, there was about 2 minutes of standup where GSP threw some gedan mawashi. There were a few kicks that landed that were pretty loud. The fight ended up going to decision where GSP esily won a unanimous decision. I have to give a lot of respect to Couture for his decisive win against Gonzaga. Coutore slamed Gonzaga to the ground in the first round and busted Gonzaga's nose. Couture continually worked on punching Gonzaga's face and in the third round the fight was called. I've never been a big UFC fan but I was glad I was able to see it in person. |

Osu,
St. Pierre is powerful and strong . His gedan mawashi geri was an effective weapon during stand up. Josh Koscheck was lost in handling the gedans and punches, he could not even execute an effective takedown. He was no match to GSP. But then Josh is young and would still have a long way to go. Funny though GSP did not declare his Kyokushin background. Although his actuations and stand up fighting style clearly show he is kyokushin. Best wishes to GSP, a true warrior. Montreal must be very proud!!! I do hope our Kyokushin Philippine fighter, Senpai Francis Pisa, in UFC Europe would make his mark over there. Osu! |

Actually, when they did the intro for GSP they list his skills and the first one they listed was "Black Belt in Kyokushin Karate".
