Good stuff!
I like your style. You originally have a TKD background? I like the way you combine sliding in push kicks with hook kicks. I havent been using hook kicks since I got into Muay Thai but it gave me something to think about. But 6 ROUNDS!!!!! ![]() Man, you Shidokan guys are tough! |

yes, the first art i trained in was TKD. i found that once i started training in muay thai and kickboxing, i could still use my TKD kicks. some trainers didn't like it or didn't think it was effective. i combined the styles of thai kicks with the TKD. from TKD i was able to get timing, distancing, and the ability to read opponents. the footwork (sliding and skipping) helps set up kicks and close the distance (so i don't get kicked). i found that i use more energy and i'm not as fast if i try to be more thai in delivery. i use more snapping power as opposed to the whipping power. in the first fight, there was no way i could out thai box matee (a former lumpinee champion), but i knew i could out TKD him.

Interesting clips, the TKD certainly adds a certain something to your kicking. What are the grabbing rules in shidokan knockdown? What do you feel training in shidokan karate brings to your overall game, given you have trained in many different styles (in the same way TKD helps with reading opponents, footwork, and kicks)?

shidokan bare knuckle rules allow 3 second grabbing/holding. you can throw an opponent with a judo or wrestling technique. you can grab behind the head and pull down into a knee. in some shidokan (karate only) tournaments, a brief time to grapple is allowed. to answer your question as to what shidokan brings to my game, i think it puts together a well rounded martial artist. the triathlon concept of karate, kickboxing, and grappling provides a format for me to do everything i enjoy. i have a background in tae kwon do, karate, boxing, kickboxing, and judo. the shidokan allowed me to do my favorite things in one event. it is an event where any fighter no matter what discipline (karateka, kickboxers, mma fighters, etc.) could enter. i had the opportunity to compete against the specialist in their area and also fight them in mine. if a specialist could dominate in their discipline and survive the others, he could win. i worked on being able to hold my own in all three. i felt that gave me a complete game.
