EliteXC Signs "Karate Hottie" Michelle Waterson
Not sure which style this girl is from but, I thought this post would be appreciated by around half the K4L members

Quote:
“The Karate Hottie” Michelle Watterson will join Gina Carano and Jennifer Tate as alumni from Oxygen’s “Fight Girls” reality television series to appear inside of an EliteXC cage.

Watterson has signed to fight on the non-televised undercard during EliteXC’s Sept. 20 show, EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw revealed to FiveOuncesOfPain.com earlier this afternoon. An opponent has yet to be determined.

Watterson, who comes from a traditional martial arts background, is 2-2 in her professional mixed martial arts career. She has fought for the Ring of Fire promotion in Colorado and most recently competed for King of the Cage, where she recorded a second round TKO against Thricia Poovey on July 12.

In addition to her fighting career, Watterson is also a professional swimsuit model.

It’s uncertain what weight Watterson will fight out, but she is believed to be in between 115-120 pounds. Unless she plans to go up to 130 pounds, her involvement could signal and even expanded commitment to women’s MMA by EliteXC by opening up a third weight class.

The venue for the Sept. 20 show is not yet official, however, FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that a press conference in Albuquerque, N.M. is scheduled for this Thursday at 2 p.m. local time. It is expected that it will be officially announce at that time that EliteXC’s Sept. 20 event will be staged in Albuquerque.

Osu!

Call it sexism if you will, but I can't see the value in women repeatedly punching each other in the face, be it Boxing, Kickboxing or MMA. (I know, there is some discrepancy when I think that Knockdown has so many benefits, particularly for women, but this seems borderline voyeurism.)

Is it just cultural/ age-based dissonance, or do others feel the same?

Osu!

I admire any woman who has the spirit to test themselves in one of the most dangerous proving grounds in our modern society. Be it Kyokushin, muay Thai, boxing, MMA or whatever. When you throw in that this lady is obviously very attractive and has a lot going for her (read: she doesn't need to fight for a living) my respect for her goes up even more.

Osu.

It's for the tv ratings....

Got to be able to charge more for advertising on the channel, and you can only do that if there are more eyeballs tuning into the programs!

It's awesome to see anyone follow their dreams. She has set a goal to be a fighter and she's pursuing it. I wish her success.

I agree with you, "kind of", but due to different reasons. Ever since I got involved with Muay Thai in '96 and was competing and/or cornering fighters I have seen many attractive females "win". Gina is a good fighter, I won't take anything away from her but I know for a fact that certain female fighters in the muay thai world are only there because they're attractive and sell tickets. I'm not going to name any names because some of these females actually know me, or used to due to who I have trained with.
I have no problem with female fighting if it's based on no "worked" fights and fair calls. I'm glad to see promotions like Smack girl with fighters like Megumi and Cindy Hales because I know they're true warriors that give it their all.
Fortunately, I think this is changing because I don't see it as much in MMA as I used to in muay thai.

well Dent, I have to say I agree with you, but it isn't sexism, because I don't see the value in men doing it either!!!!!

Can I flick your question back to you and ask, what is the value in men doing it? And why does that same value not apply to women?

This is really a sit down discussion. I apologize for any gaps as I try to squeeze my opinion into a few lines.

That dissonance is why I called potential sexism into it. From my POV, men are praised socially for looking like they've been through the wringer. (And we could spend hour after hour discussing why that is, but I'll just take it as read.) The same standard does not apply to women.

I believe that FightSport is a far preferable outlet for young men to their taking those same desires to the street. Given the number of young women brawling right now, I wonder whether it wouldn't do them some good too? Or is there a better way?

Violence against women, or even between women, has long been an issue due both the reproductive and resource influenced questions. I know they aren't helpless little flowers in need of a man's protection, but they are just as vulnerable to exploitation as any man, and as PowerofOne says, for different reasons than many men.

Just as I've seen guys fed a line on their skills to get them to face a much better opponent, I've also seen women served up to the spectators because of their looks. When those are sufficiently damaged, they stop getting offered fights, even if they are much improved over their earlier bouts.

Watching the videos, I can just see her getting a fight based on her appearance rather than her skills, facing off against a far better opponent, and then taking far more damage than she imagined. (Anyone been to a few post fight conferences?)

Personally, I want all my kids to follow their dreams, wherever they may take them, but I hope that doesn't take them in the same multiple-fracture direction it did me. I hope this for my son, but especially for my daughters...

Osu!
