Quick note about Pride...
When I lived in Japan, I worked for several ad agencies.
The last agency that I was at had a team who was heavily involved in a sponsor for boxing (specifically the Kameda brothers). Anyway, so I am in Okinawa with my wife last month, and we were in a store, and wouldn't you know....the guy who was in charge of that account (he has scored me ring side sponsor seats to a number of the fights while I worked there) comes walking down the aisle towards me... We were both surprised, and I told him a little bit about my new job and whatnot, and he tells me that they are now working with the LA office of the ad agency to develop new marketing strategies for Pride in the USA and beyond. Why couldn't this have happened while I was there!!! That would be a great client to work for..... I told him that next time he was in the USA, that he should swing by NY!!! Hopefully I can keep close enough to him, that he can get me tickets to some of the USA fights!! vapor |

Pride will certainly help developing the current MMA world. I'm looking forward to see fighters from both UFC and Pride fight in a big event.

Isn't Pride dead? As much as I was a fan, UFC has taken the lead in MMA and Pride is nothing more than a has been in Japan and practically non-existent in the US despite a decent showing last October in Vegas.

OK, here is a lazy question:
What is really the difference between pride, ufc and the rest? They also have Club deep here in Japan. Is there an article written somewhere that just outlines the world of mma?

OSU Kris!
Pride, UFC and probably the "rest" you are refering to are organization that host specific type of events. The rules are common- throws, striking, ground fighting, submissions. There are some minor differences, though, that may be of great importance for certain fighters. For example there are no elbows allowed in Pride. In UFC elbows are allowed. That's why in a recent interview Fedor's manager said that if the Russian Sambist goes to UFC, he will eventually need some time to get used not only to the cage(in Pride there is a ring-another "minor" difference), but also to the elbows. Thanx Ibuki!
They way I hear it is that they rank differently, so that a fighter have to start in one before moving to the next. Is this true? Which one ranks higher?

I don't think there is a rank between the organizations. Of course it is as in Kyokushin- you start by a local event and continue to an international. From which organization you start and where you finish in the world of MMA depends on where do you live (for the start) and what do you acomplish(for the end). There are very good events held by Pride, SHooto, UFC, of course. Fighters' managers negotiate for the conditions and where the fighter will end up is a summit of factors such a payment, number of fights and extent of binding to the given organization and its partners. Pride had the best production when I look at the two. The use of kicks, stomps and knees to a downed opponent (not legal in UFC) will be missed. These tactics are better for strikes and UFC leans a little towards the takedown artist (as far as attacking the legs). The strategies of the two are different. Before UFC's acquistion of Pride, they focused more on US fighters, where Pride was more international. Now the UFC using Pride fighters in it's events, it is more international. It is the only you can have "World Champions", where as before it seem that most of the top guys mainly fought US fighters. I enjoy it just the same. I just miss the stomps, knees and kicks to the downed fighter.

The stomps will really be missed, as i said, i don't watch a lot, but it was very cool when the fight keeps up, not on the ground...

another cool thing with pride was the yellow cards. if fighters, stalled and didn't give action they got penalized with cards (and lost some of their purse). the UFC is missing Fedor in the heavyweight division. they want him to do an exclusive contract and he doesn't won't to be bond to just that organization. that is why there has been no deal established between them yet. i just got back from a trip from russia and he is like jordon, gretsky, over their.
