I've personally known Cindy Hales since '98 '99..she started in Muay Thai at the same gym I came from and then went into BJJ and was a prodigy at it. She got her black belt in bjj, in about 5 years, she is very very very good at BJJ. She trains with Rodrigo Lopes and Eric Dhalberg; Rodrigo is the Seattle Gracie Barra instructor and Eric is under Gracie Barra but owns Demon jiu jitsu in Tukwila, WA (not far from Seattle). Cindy was supposed to fight in smackgirl before but couldn't go due to neck surgery...my money is on Cindy.
Cindy also beat Lisa Ward before, even though it's not posted on Sherdog.com - Serving up Heaping Fistfuls of Mixed Martial Arts she did, my brother was at the fight. Megumi is tough...if you have the means, I'd suggest watching this.

Brief summary of the press conference on 2/13 at Suidobashi, Tokyo.

Cindy Wales, Lisa Ward and Ana Michelle Tawares were present. Cindy Wales, who is here in Japan for the first time, is a Kuro Obi in Grace Barra. She has fought in five MMA fights and no losses so far. Shioda, the winner of last year's ADCC said "She (Cindy Wales) is the strongest."

The "main event" will be Cindy Wales vs Fujii Megumi, and both have fought in ADCC and PanAm before. "I saw her fight. She is very strong and I repsect her. I feel honored to fight Fujii and I will take my 1st match as the final.", said Cindy.

At the press conference Cindy was wearing a pair of sunglasses and the bump on her eye was obvious. "I sparred with Lisa (Ward) yesterday. I think I will be okay by tomorrow", said Cindy.

Cindy, like Fujii, is also good at Newaza. Therefore the attack and defense on the ground will decide the winner of this fight. "Fujii is good at leglocks. I have seen her won by Sankaku Jime, but I am good at that too.", said Cindy.

After that, Lisa Ward commented "My opponent is good with punches, but they are smaller than mine." She also hinted that if the fight went to the ground it would be at her advantage. As for who she would be fighting in the final, Lisa said any strong fighter would do.

Ana said she knew nothing about her opponent except for her wrestling background. Her aim is to defeat Fujii (she lost to Fujii in G-Shooto in 2005) and become the winner of the tournament.

Three fighters from Zendokai took part. Only Megu scored a win. Saori Ishioka did a good match. She did the full two rounds and got many hits and some throws/takedowns. A few times she was close to getting Ham Seo Hee into submission but no win. Ham Seo Hee was stronger and pushed the fight with fast series of punches. From what I could tell Ishioka also had a bit of bad day. She just looked like she was in a bad mood. I am sure she will come back with a vengeance next time.

I was wrong about Cindy beating Lisa Ward. It was in a grappling match, not an MMA fight. Thank you Lisa, for correcting me.

On 7/24, Megumi and Michelle will fight in the final.
