In yesterday's evening paper (Nikkei Shimbun) it was reported that men who drink 5 cups of green tea per day reduce their risk of prostrate cancer by half compared to men who drink one cup or less.

Dear meguro,
I also read that story. It says that green tea will only help to reduce the risk of advanced but not localised cancer. ![]() (black bar:advanced cancer/white bar:localised cancer/column on left <1 cup, then to the right 1-2,3-4 and 5>) On the next graph we see the relationship between green tea consumption and having prostate cancer. Looks like it does not help much, but green tea I believe is still a healthy drink anyway. ![]() OSU!

Kakatootoshi - nice data! But the most important thing is that green tea tastes good. Life is too short to torture your tastebuds! ![]()

Thanks for the clarification, kakatootoshi, though it's still not clear to me. Are they saying green tea reduces the risk of cancer spreading (advanced), but not when it's localised (say a solid tumor)? Either way, I'll take it. At least it doesn't taste like cough syrup.

Dear meguro,
Well it looks that way. They say that the results about advanced cancer could be "random" because of the small number of samples. You may check out the report from Koseirodosho. Koseirodosho OSU!

I too read the article in the Nikkei, and while the research may not be conclusive, it certainly is a much better alternative than drinking a cola or coffee I am sure

I'm a massive tea drinker myself. I ended up giving up most forms of liquid partly because of the additives but mostly because I can only afford tea and water.
I know i'm new here but here's some of the things that I am currently looking into. Shade grown tea seems to be regarded as the healthier tea to drink so everyday i've been trying to get my hands on Gyokuro which is one of the best shade grown teas as it's also used in Japanese tea ceremony as Matcha. Most health food stores, or if you live next to a Wegman's, carry Ito En tea. Currently the Andrew Weil tea products seem to be the cheapest way to enjoy gyokuro which is fairly expensive. Roasting and Fermenting the tea such as in houji and oolong tea blends destroys most of what is good in it. Though the fermenting of oolong is credited to help the digestive system. Tea is alkaline which lowers the acid in your body and saliva. Lots of food and drink have chemicals that are highly acidic. Drinking tea can lower that, preventing tooth decay, bad breath, and damage to your muscle and skin tissue. -Gar |

Just stumbled accross this thread by mistake, Im trying a form of Japanese green tea known as Matcha which is basically ground up baby leaf tips (ma = ground. cha = tea.). The benefit is supposedly up to 6 times that of regular green tea. The convenient part is you just add half a tea spoon to a cup of hot water and drink, good alternative to coffee at work!
![]() It's also possible to make green tea icecream, bread, cakes etc with Matcha. Matcha green tea: What is it? Why is it healthier than other green tea? How do I use it? Last edited by ANTSAN; 05-15-2008 at 09:33 AM. |

Osu!
I do enjoy green tea, as well as some of the Taiwanese teas I've found. (17 being a favorite.) For a change of pace, see if you can find Rooibos (Lit: Red bush) tea in your area. High in anti-oxidants, and a pleasantly dry aftertaste. Osu!

Osu! Brad,
It's a bit difficult to describe, but it isn't sweet, bitter, or any other description I can come up with other than dry. But it's dry as in a dry wine, not dust. ![]() Osu!
