Dude, you have enough trouble holding weight without going vegan!! But, to be fair and not sceptical (okay I am sceptical), I'm sure a vegan diet is fantastic for you if you do the science & carefully balance your diet & don't just cut out half the nutrients you should be consuming & snack on oversalted soy based junk! ![]() |

From a layman's view I would say the tofu wins. Meat really has not got that much protein in it. I suggest get a protein powder if you wanna gain.

check out the following link:
http://teaching.ucdavis.edu/nut10/ha...sc/content.pdf Unfortunately, it lists some protein counts against 100g of food, and others against 3.5oz, but that's about right/comparable. 28g = 1 oz. What it doesn't take into account is the other stuff in the food. Steamed Tofu is considerably lower in protein than say, chicken. But it is also much, much lower in fat. However, if you fry the tofu, as many recipes require, then that benefit is offset. Generally speaking, if you wish to train very hard and be vegetarian, you need to know a lot more about nutrition than just how much protein is in tofu. I'd strongly recommend going to see a sports dietician. Happy Munching!

What type of Tofu are you looking into?
I'm looking at the labels of 2 tofu packages, 1 Organic Tofu (the white block type) is 8g of protein Organic Tempeh (tofu mixed with items like millet, brown rice, barley etc) 240mg If you like met try to eat other types of meat like deer, elk, caribou, bison, ostrich, in place of beef. double the protein and 1/2 the fat. PS if possible eat organic or wild grown meats to avoid all the chemicals and crap.. |

I have grown up with meats in my diet so my body seems to require them. Recently I have been eating a lot of vegetarian foods and my body needs more quantities in a meal than having a meal with meats. What I mean here is that I need to eat extra vege foods to keep me full. Anyway being a vegan is not wrong or right. Osu. Last edited by nzproud; 12-15-2007 at 09:35 PM. |

Try doing a colon cleansing
Once this is done you can switch over to organic foods, after 30 days + - you will see that you require less food to be full. Once you remove all the toxins (and fecal matter easy you could lose 5 to 30 lbs) from the walls of your colon and you replace processed foods (full of chemicals and death... no enzymes etc) with organic live foods your body will be able to posses the food better and with more important vitamins, etc, you eat less. You will stay strong and your food bill will go down even though organic is more costly. BUT this will only happen if you go 100% organic if you eat a little or half your waisting money and doing no good for your body... Think it this way, you spend so much time to keep (or get) your outer body in shape, it is only logical to keep the other half (inner body) health..... I was a meat, with meat on my meat person, I now still eat meat but I'll go weeks without it, without withdrawals (I must admit I do miss it but my body does not) |

soy is considered by most to be a complete protein, which means that it contains all of the essential amino acids. soy is also much easier to digest than meat and is processed a lot faster. there are also a ton of other ways to get protein on vegan diet tempeh, nuts, beans, lentils, and grains all contain protein. i have been vegan for over four years now and i can tell you that you can get all your nutritional needs from a vegan diet. if you have any questions regarding vegan ntrition send me a message.

HI Crazylegs...welcome to the Forum. Many thanks for contributing a more expert vegan perspective to this thread. Nice to hear from you.
Can I suggest that you pop over to the introductions forum, and start a thread there? That way, everyone can get to know you a little better. And, BTW...great name!!!!!

If you're a vegan or living with a vegan, then this suggestion won't work. But for everyone else, why not mix the tofu and meat together. Just use a very small amount of meat for the flavor and use a larger portion of tofu as the main source of protein. Mabodofu is a Chinese dish, popular in Japan, that consists of ground pork, tofu, and hot spices. The ground pork and spices, make the tofu (let's face it, it's tasteless) quite tasty. I think I'll fix some up tonight.

Ehh
Its really a toss up,
soy has more protein than meat, but soy also has estrogen which is a female hormone and makes you grow man boobs, meat again has less protein but doesn't make you grow some man boobs which is good, i suggest a protein shake, start off with one and you can go for more, but make sure you work out every day, cause that excess protein gets turned to fat if you dont work out hard enough. |

Osu!
My 2c worth? Balance. Eat beef, chicken, mutton, fish, tofu, nuts, legumes, horse etc etc etc. As long as you're getting the nutrients from a variety of sources, I think you're well set. Osu! |

i still think chicken and fish mixed with a protien shakes and some nuts are the best, even chicken is iffy cause i hear they are now injecting chickens with hormones to make them softer and taste better, but i dont know how good it is for you

Athletes, especially female athletes, need iron. tofu hasn't got much, nor has chickent. Beef and lamb are good sources of iron.
However, beef and lamb don't have oestrogens - which are also good for women, especially older women. So I'm a member of the 'all things in balance" club. ![]() |

Dai,
I was vegetarian for 6 years vegan for 2. I got to 66 kilos, and you know what kind of frame thats hanging on. Not good. ![]() Now after returning to the "dark side" I am 85 easy. Most of the comments here a kind of accurate, the fat versus protein offset plays a part, but vegetable and soy proteins are not complete, milk and meat are. If you are training alot you are not going to be able to sufficiently repair the damage caused. Period. I studied nutrition fanatically for years to figure out what was best to build muscle and the reality is milk and meat based protiens are the best without arguement. Meat also provides Iron, and other minerals/ vitamins your body needs to survive. Being anemic is going to stop your training. Musashi, after being an uber militant vegan freak for years (14) has realised she cant train without eating meat, not at a high level anyways. Now she chows on Chicken and sometimes even Pork or Beef.

Osu! Lanky Sempai,
I've seen a friend go from Veggie to Vegan and all the way back to meat. While he was comfortably padded as a Veggie, he got really sick as a Vegan, and is now in the best shape I've ever seen him as an Omnivore. Like he says, "We must have canines for a reason..." Osu! |

Yes, I understand, but did say vegetarian, not vegan
I make sure I get my share of milk and cheese, sometimes too much No big secret that balanced diet is the answer. If you suddenly start losing weight, itīs not a good sign!Iīve always been on the ībigī side - rugby prop forward at school, heavyweight from 1st kk tournament etc. At the moment Iīm about 10/15kg too heavy (130kg) due to around 3 years of indolence (knee-injury) - so donīt think Iīve done too badly as veggie! ![]() |
