Why Are The Healthier Foods More Expensive?
this is something i've been wondering for a long time.i thought since the healthier foods had less ingredients,it would be cheaper but is it harder to process the healthier foods?

I think that healthier foods are more expensive because they are not part of the "bulk" sales. In other words, they are specialty items. If everyone bought health directed foods instead of junk food, you would find the price of health food go down, and junk food would become more expensive.

Osu!

Let's not forget that junk food has a lot of filler. Add in preservatives, and you can keep all the bad stuff around a lot longer too.

They're not processed. Therefore they are usually made up of high quality fresh ingredients with a very finite lifespan...

Because usually they're harder to get/make than the jusnk food, and because less people buy them, they raise the price. and it's also about the recession, the inflation, the gas prices...itws a lot of things.

kabirlovero,

The things you mention have the same impact on processed/non-organic foods.

Try Trader Joe's if you have one in your area. Healthy food at reasonable prices.

Even fruit and vegetables can be in the no man's land of health food. By the time the non-organic fertilizer, pesticide and preserving waxes are applied, the mango in Tilford Tesco is very different from the one in Thailand.

Organic fruit and veg are harder to produce and maintain, so some of those foods can be blankety expensive too.

true true.

i know a couple of body builders from the gym and the amount of money that they spend on their food is just crazy, as this food is as healthy as it gets.

While were on this topic I just thought I'd share something I found in the NYTimes.

Environmental Working Group tested thousands of fruits and vegetables for pesticides and made a list from highest (pesticide count) to lowest. So one can pretty much figure out, from looking at the list, which fruits and vegetables are worth buying organic and which would be a waste.

But avocados, mangos and pineapples are low - mango is be my favourite fruit , although I imagine the list would be different here in Europe...

Why APPLES! Gee.. we can grow apples in our backyard! Pineapples, and mangos have to be imported. I could see extra effort having to happen to protect them from pests, but apples?
